Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

By 2:00 p.m., the fog had cleared completely, leaving behind a crisp, sunny afternoon over the harbor.

The news of Julian’s capture and the destruction of the Morello ambush in Queens had swept through the syndicate like wildfire. The Morello family had lost eight of their top enforcers in the blind alley trap set by Matteo’s men. Their power in New York was broken beyond repair.

In the master study of the Moretti mansion, Alessandro sat behind his desk.

The door opened, and Matteo escorted me into the room. I was wearing a simple, elegant dark green dress that Sofia had brought for me, my hair neatly combed. Emma was downstairs in the kitchen, happily eating fresh cookies with the head chef.

“Sit down, Clara,” Alessandro said gently, pointing to the plush armchair across from his desk.

I sat down, feeling a mixture of relief and lingering anxiety. “Is it over, Mr. Moretti?”

“It is over,” he confirmed, closing a thick leather folder. “The traitor has been dealt with. The Morello family will no longer pose a threat to anyone in this city.”

He leaned forward, placing his hands on the mahogany desk, looking directly into my eyes.

“I owe you an explanation,” he said softly.

“An explanation?” I asked, surprised.

“Two years ago, when you applied for the housemaid position,” Alessandro began, his tone deep and reflective, “I knew who you were.”

I froze. My breath caught in my throat. “What?”

“Your late husband, David, was an honest accountant who worked for a freight company in Newark,” Alessandro revealed quietly. “He discovered that his company was laundering money for the Morello syndicate. When he refused to stay quiet, they murdered him and made it look like a robbery.”

Tears welled up in my eyes as the painful memories of my husband’s death flooded back. “I… I knew it wasn't a robbery. That’s why I fled Newark with Emma. I was terrified they would come after us next.”

“I brought you to my estate specifically because it was the safest place on the East Coast,” Alessandro confessed, his eyes filled with a deep, protective sincerity. “I wanted to give you shelter, a job, and a quiet life where the Morellos could never touch you. But I made a terrible mistake.”

He stood up and walked around the desk, standing before me.

“I allowed my housekeepers to treat you like a servant. I allowed my pride and my coldness to keep me distant from the people living under my own roof. I almost let you die in that cottage because I wasn't paying attention.”

“Mr. Moretti…” I whispered, wiping a tear from my cheek. “You saved our lives today. You gave us a home when we had nothing.”

“I want to give you more than a home, Clara,” he said, his voice dropping into an intimate, gentle register.
