Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum

Before I could speak, before I could process the adrenaline still coursing through my veins, Dominic crossed the small panic room in two long strides, grabbed me by the shoulders, and pulled me violently against his chest.

His embrace was desperate, fierce, and entirely devoid of his usual controlled restraint. I could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against my ribs, matching the frantic rhythm of my own.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his voice rough and ragged against my hair as his hands checked my arms for injuries. “Did any of them reach this section of the estate?”

“I’m fine,” I breathed, pressing my palms against the solid wall of his chest, feeling the heat radiating through his linen shirt. “I was locked safely inside the vault the entire time. But you... you could have been killed out there.”

Dominic pulled back just enough to look down into my face, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that eclipsed the gunfire outside.

“They weren't here for my money, Elena,” he said, his voice dropping into a fierce, raw whisper that tore straight through my soul. “They knew where my archives were. They knew about the vulnerabilities Marcus and I have been trying to patch. Someone inside my inner circle leaked our security protocols.”

My breath hitched. “A mole?”

“Yes,” Dominic confirmed grimly. “Which means Maison de Corbeau is no longer safe. Not for me, and certainly not for you.”

He reached up, his thumb gently brushing a smudge of soot from my cheek with a tenderness that completely contradicted the chaotic violence echoing from the foyer outside.

“You’re resigning,” Dominic stated, leaving no room for argument. “I’m putting you on a private jet to Boston tonight with a secure retainer. You will finish your degree, live a normal life, and never look back at this dark world again.”

Hearing those words—realizing he was planning to send me away to protect me—sent a sudden, sharp pain lancing through my chest.

“Send me away?” I echoed, pulling back from his grip, my own defiance flaring up to meet his. “After everything we’ve been through? After you shared your midnight audits and your secret archives with me, you think you can just pack me off like an inconvenient piece of luggage?”

“This isn't a debate, Elena!” Dominic snapped, his voice finally rising, cracking the cool veneer he always maintained. “You don't belong in the syndicate wars! You’re a brilliant, vibrant, music-loving woman who deserves to sing in Madison Square Garden, not hide in a panic room while men bleed out on my foyer floor!”

“I don't want Madison Square Garden!” I shouted back, stepping right up to his chest, refusing to back down. “I want the person who isn't afraid of the dark! And whether you like it or not, Dominic Vale, that person is standing right in front of me!”

The air between us charged with an explosive, emotional energy that dwarfed the gunfight outside.

Dominic stared down at me, his chest heaving, every muscle in his frame locked in a desperate internal war between his instinct to protect me by pushing me away and his desperate desire to pull me close and never let go.

Then, with a low, defeated groan, Dominic cupped my face in both his large, warm hands, leaned down, and kissed me.

It wasn't a gentle, polite kiss. It was fierce, hungry, and absolute—a collision of two worlds that had no business crashing into one another, yet fit together with terrifying, undeniable perfection. His lips tasted of gunpowder and raw desperation, and as my arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer, every rule, every protocol, and every danger in our universe melted away into nothingness.

When we finally broke apart, both of us breathless and trembling, Dominic rested his forehead gently against mine, his eyes dark with a quiet, terrifying devotion.

“God help me, Elena,” he whispered against my lips. “I tried so hard to keep you out of the storm.”

“I’m not afraid of your storm, Dominic,” I whispered back. “Let me help you weather it.”
