Chapter 8 - A Father’s Blessing

Two days later.

The private wing of Massachusetts General Hospital was locked down under heavy security. Four Moretti soldiers stood guard in the hallway, dressed in sharp black suits, keeping the floor completely clear of unapproved visitors.

Inside Room 602, the sun was shining brightly through the wide glass windows.

Arthur Hale—Vanessa’s father—was sitting upright in an adjustable hospital bed. He was sixty-two years old, thin and pale from months of medical neglect, but his eyes were bright, clear, and alert. Oxygen tubes rested gently beneath his nose, connected to modern, top-tier medical equipment.

Vanessa was sitting in a chair beside his bed, holding his hand, laughing softly as tears of happiness glistened in her eyes.

I stood near the window, dressed in a charcoal coat, watching them quietly.

Arthur turned his head and looked toward me.

“Alessandro,” the old man called out, his voice thin and raspy, but full of warmth.

I walked over to the side of the bed. “Mr. Hale. How are you feeling today?”

“Like a man who was given a second life,” Arthur said, a weak smile touching his cracked lips. He reached out with his free hand and took mine, squeezing it with surprising strength. “Vanessa told me everything… what you did in Montreal… how you brought your own medical team to rescue me from those monsters.”

“You are Vanessa’s father,” I replied simply. “You are family now.”

Arthur looked down at his daughter, running his thin fingers through her hair. “I was so afraid I would never see her get married… so afraid that my existence would become a curse for her.”

He looked back up at me, his eyes solemn and deep with emotion.

“Alessandro,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a serious register. “I spent thirty years as a civil engineer. I know nothing about your world… about the violence, the power, or the rules you live by. But I know a good man when I see one.”

He took Vanessa’s right hand and placed it gently into my left hand, wrapping his old, calloused fingers around both of ours.

“Take care of my daughter,” Arthur whispered, his eyes swelling with water. “Protect her not with your guns… but with your heart.”

I looked at Vanessa, whose beautiful face was radiant with peace for the first time since I had met her.

“I give you my word as a Moretti,” I promised softly. “She will never know fear again.”

Arthur closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the white pillows with a deep, contented sigh of pure relief.
