Chapter 10 - The Promise of Tomorrow

That evening.

The sun had set over Narragansett Bay, painting the horizon in breathtaking shades of deep violet, fiery orange, and soft rose gold.

A small, quiet reception was held on the outdoor stone terrace overlooking the water. Warm string lights hung from the wooden pergola, casting a soft, golden glow over the tables loaded with fresh Italian seafood, red wine, and wedding cake.

In the garden below the terrace, little Emma was running through the grass, chasing fireflies with her small basket, her red ribbon fluttering in the gentle evening breeze. Sophia sat on a stone bench nearby, sipping a glass of prosecco with Arthur Hale, laughing as they watched the child play.

Luca stood near the stone archway, holding a glass of wine, keeping his watchful eye on the perimeter—not out of anxiety, but out of lifelong habit.

I stood at the stone edge of the terrace, wearing my tuxedo jacket, holding a glass of vintage wine.

Vanessa stepped up beside me, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head gently against my shoulder. The cool ocean breeze rustled her lace dress.

“What are you thinking about, husband?” she asked softly, using the word for the very first time.

I set my glass down on the stone ledge and wrapped my right arm around her waist, pulling her close against my side.

“I’m thinking about how close I came to losing everything,” I admitted quietly, looking out at the calm, dark waters of the bay. “If Emma hadn't run down that aisle… if I hadn't looked into her eyes… I would have spent the rest of my life consumed by paranoia, violence, and hatred.”

Vanessa lifted her head and looked at me, her blue eyes reflecting the warm glow of the terrace lights.

“You didn't lose everything, Alessandro,” she whispered, reaching up to gently touch my cheek. “Because you listened. You chose to trust love instead of fear.”

She reached into her dress pocket and pulled out a small object, resting it in the palm of my hand.

It was the silver pocket watch.

Not Ryan’s ticking watch of betrayal, but her father’s old silver watch—the one that had brought us truth, healing, and peace.

“Keep it,” Vanessa murmured softly. “To remind you that time is precious… and that our new life starts tonight.”

I looked down at the silver watch resting in my hand, its second hand moving with smooth, quiet, precise rhythm under the glass cover.

I closed my fingers around it, pulled Vanessa close, and kissed her deeply beneath the quiet, starlit sky of Providence.

Behind us, the sound of little Emma’s innocent laughter echoed through the garden, floating up into the clear night air like a song of peace that would last for generations to come.
