Chapter 9 - Clear Skies

The following Monday morning, rain was once again falling over New York.
Not a torrential downpour, but that steady, gray, miserable drizzle that made the asphalt shine like black glass and left silver puddles across the JFK tarmac.
Amelia Clare walked through Terminal Four with the familiar, steady stride of someone who owned her space. She wore her black leggings, clean white sneakers, and her favorite charcoal cashmere hoodie. Her hair was pulled back into its loose, unfussy bun.
She bypassed the chaotic crowds clustered around the general boarding desks, walking straight up to the priority lane.
As she handed her phone to the gate agent—a young man with a polite, professional smile—the scanner beeped instantly. A bright green confirmation light flashed across the screen.
AMELIA CLARE
FLIGHT 404
FIRST CLASS — SEAT 1A
PRIORITY ONE
The agent looked up, smiled warmly, and handed her phone back. “Welcome aboard, Ms. Clare. Have a wonderful flight.”
“Thank you,” Amelia said smoothly.
She walked down the jetbridge, stepped into the sunlit, spacious first-class cabin of the aircraft, and slid her slim black bag into the overhead bin.
As she settled into Seat 1A by the window, she pulled out her phone and slipped the custom silver luggage tag Julian Sterling had sent her onto the handle of her carry-on bag.
Across the aisle, a businessman in an expensive navy suit glanced over, looked at her charcoal hoodie, and opened his mouth as if to offer some unsolicited advice about boarding decorum.
Amelia didn't wait for him to speak. She turned her head slowly, fixed him with a calm, absolute stare that carried the weight of four billion dollars and an ironclad corporate empire, and pulled her wireless earbud out just an inch.
The man closed his mouth immediately, turned back to his newspaper, and pretended very hard that he was invisible.

Amelia smiled, slid her earbud back in, opened her laptop to a fresh, blank document titled TRANS-GLOBAL RESTRUCTURING — PHASE ONE, and began to type.
The cabin doors closed with a soft, pneumatic hiss. The engines roared to life, drowning out the rain outside, and Flight 404 taxied smoothly out toward the open runway, lifting gracefully into the gray New York sky toward clear horizons and absolute control.
