Chapter 6 - The New Guard

The boardroom at Sovereign Atlantic’s Los Angeles headquarters was twice the size of the Manhattan conference room, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the bustling tarmac where silver jets roared into the California sun. But unlike the previous administration’s sterile, mahogany-and-leather mausoleum, this room buzzed with chaotic, vibrant energy.
Vanessa sat at the head of the long glass table, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows, reviewing a digital org chart that spanned three giant monitors.
The door swung open, and Marcus Vance walked in. He wasn't wearing a suit; he still wore his maroon Pinnacle University hoodie over a crisp cotton shirt, but his eyes were sharp, alert, and brimming with fierce intelligence. Behind him walked Denise Carver, now dressed in a sharp, elegant emerald-green blazer that signaled her dramatic ascent from gate supervisor to corporate executive.
"Dr. Hamilton," Marcus said, halting respectfully near the end of the table. "You wanted to see me?"
Vanessa looked up, a warm, genuine smile breaking across her face—the first real smile she had shown since stepping off the Gulfstream.
"Sit down, Marcus," Vanessa said, gesturing to the chair opposite her. "I watched your footage from Terminal 4 three more times last night. You had every reason to panic, to run away, or to mind your own business. Instead, you kept your cool, recorded the evidence with absolute precision, and made sure it reached the right hands without hesitation. That is tactical awareness. That is courage."
Marcus swallowed hard, running a hand through his messy brown hair. "I just hated seeing someone get bullied like that, Dr. Hamilton. Especially when I knew who you were on the manifest."
"Well, your intuition just earned you a seat at the table," Vanessa said, sliding a thick leather-bound employment contract across the table. "As Junior Director of Terminal Operations for the Northeast Region, you’ll be auditing every single gate crew, baggage handling protocol, and security interface from Boston to Washington, D.C. Your starting salary is one hundred and eighty thousand dollars a year, plus full tuition coverage to finish your degree at Pinnacle University."
Marcus stared at the document, his jaw dropping so low it nearly hit the table. "One hundred and eighty... Dr. Hamilton, I was making eighteen dollars an hour handling luggage carts yesterday morning!"
"Then I suggest you learn how to budget," Vanessa laughed, her voice ringing clear and musical across the room. "Because starting today, you answer directly to Denise."
Denise smiled warmly at the young man, leaning forward to clasp his shoulder. "Welcome to the team, Marcus. We’ve got a lot of cleaning up to do."
"Now," Vanessa said, her expression shifting back to fierce, analytical intensity as she tapped her touchscreen. "Let's talk about the operational overhaul. Naomi, give me the litigation update."

Naomi Okafor looked up from her legal tablet, her expression grim yet satisfied. "The civil lawsuits against Officer Miller and the Port Authority security detail have been formally filed in federal court. The police precinct chief called three times this morning offering an out-of-court settlement and a full public apology. Furthermore, Megan Wilson’s union representative attempted to file an emergency grievance for wrongful termination. We countered with our internal audit findings detailing systematic customer abuse and extortion rings operating out of Terminal 4. The union dropped her case twenty minutes ago."
Vanessa nodded slowly. "Good. No settlements out of court unless they include full public admissions of liability. I want it on record that Sovereign Atlantic does not tolerate harassment, and neither does the law."
