Chapter 5 - The Purge Begins

Inside the studio, the live chat feed scrolled so fast it looked like tumbling code in a hacker movie. Breakroom monitors in Atlanta, Dallas, and London fell dead silent as thousands of employees stared at their screens in stunned disbelief. No CEO in the history of commercial aviation had ever opened an acquisition speech by admitting to being handcuffed by their own security staff.

"Last night," Vanessa continued, her voice ringing with icy clarity, "I walked into Terminal 4 wearing an oversized hoodie, sweatpants, and scuffed sneakers. I wanted what every exhausted traveler wants: a quiet seat, a few hours of sleep, and a safe journey to Los Angeles. Instead, I was treated like a criminal. I was insulted, degraded, and physically assaulted because of my clothing, my race, and the arrogant assumption that luxury belongs exclusively to those who project a specific aesthetic of wealth."

In hundreds of airport breakrooms, middle managers who had spent years ruling their stations with petty tyranny suddenly felt a cold knot tighten in their stomachs.

"Let’s talk about standards," Vanessa said, turning slightly toward a virtual whiteboard where Naomi had queued up high-resolution still frames from the terminal CCTV footage. "First on the screen: Flight Attendant Megan Wilson. Displaying clear evidence of workplace abuse, discrimination, and gross insubordination. Effective immediately, Megan Wilson’s employment contract with Sovereign Atlantic is terminated for cause. Her pension vesting is forfeited under Section 11 of our corporate ethics clause, and legal referrals for civil harassment have been filed."

A collective gasp echoed across crew lounges nationwide. Megan Wilson was a twenty-year veteran union darling; nobody had ever touched her. Until now.

"Next," Vanessa said, the screen shifting to show Officer Miller and the security intake room. "Officer Miller, badge 4417, and his two assisting officers. The civil rights violations, unlawful detention, and physical assault charges filed against them are currently being processed by the Eastern District federal prosecutor’s office. Furthermore, Sovereign Atlantic is severing all exclusive terminal security contracts with the Port Authority private detail effective midnight tonight."

Vanessa leaned forward, resting her hands on the studio desk, locking her dark eyes onto the camera lens.

"And let us talk about complicity," Vanessa said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying weight. "Because cruelty doesn't just survive through loud abusers; it survives through silent accomplices who watch injustice happen and choose convenience over courage."

The screen flickered, displaying a clear, close-up frame of gate supervisor Denise Carver standing frozen with her tablet while Megan Wilson bullied her into silence.

Denise Carver, sitting in her modest apartment in Queens watching the stream with her morning coffee, let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as tears welled in her eyes. Here it comes, she thought. I'm fired. I'm ruined.

"Denise Carver," Vanessa announced, her voice softening just a fraction. "Gate Supervisor, JFK Terminal 4."

Denise closed her eyes, bracing for the hammer to fall.

"Yesterday evening," Vanessa continued, "Denise looked at her manifest, recognized that her employer was being illegally detained, and tried to speak up. She was silenced by intimidation. But she kept her tablet. She kept the records. And she showed a quiet conscience when it mattered most."

Vanessa paused, letting the silence hang heavy.

"Effective immediately," Vanessa stated clearly, "Denise Carver is promoted to Vice President of Global Passenger Experience and Station Compliance. She will be relocating to corporate headquarters in Manhattan, with a one-hundred-and-fifty percent salary increase, starting Monday."

In her Queens apartment, Denise burst into uncontrollable tears, dropping her coffee mug as it shattered harmlessly against the kitchen floor.

"And finally," Vanessa said, her expression hardening once more into steel, "let's talk about the culture of this airline. For too long, Sovereign Atlantic has been run like an aristocratic playground for pencil-pushers who treat passengers like cattle and frontline workers like disposable tools. That era is dead. Today, we rebuild from the ground up."
