Chapter 9 - The Baptism of Fire and Snow

Spring arrived with a brilliant explosion of blooming magnolias across the estate grounds, bringing with it the most anticipated day of our lives.
The private chapel was filled not with syndicate capos, crooked politicians, and armed guards discussing business, but with genuine friends, trusted allies, and family. The altar was banked with thousands of white roses, and soft, classical violin music drifted through the vaulted arches.
I stood in the sacristy, wearing a simple, elegant ivory silk gown that hugged my advanced pregnancy with quiet grace, adjusting my veil in front of the mirror.
The door clicked open, and Ethan walked in.
He looked stunning in a bespoke navy-blue tuxedo, but what caught my breath was the raw, trembling emotion shining in his gray eyes. He walked up behind me, resting his hands gently on my shoulders, looking at our reflections in the glass.
“You’re terrified,” I teased gently, turning around to face him.
“I’m terrified that this is all a dream and I’m going to wake up in an empty study,” Ethan admitted, his voice cracking slightly as he pulled me into his arms, carefully pressing his cheek against my hair.
“It’s not a dream, Ethan,” I whispered, taking his face in my hands. “We earned every single second of this.”
Ten minutes later, we stood before the altar—not to sign a business contract, but to reaffirm vows we finally meant with every beat of our hearts.
As Ethan slid a new diamond band onto my finger—one that sat alongside the cold wedding ring from our first ceremony like a brilliant sunrise following a long winter night—he lifted my veil.
His eyes searched mine, filled with an ocean of devotion.
“I, Ethan, take you, Jane, to be my wife, my equal, my partner, and my soulmate,” he said, his voice ringing clear and steady through the chapel. “I loved you when you were a stranger in my house, I loved you when you stood beside me in the fire, and I will love you until my last breath.”

“And I, Jane, take you, Ethan,” I replied, tears of pure joy spilling down my cheeks. “To stand by your side as your true partner, to share your victories, and to build a life where fear has no home.”
When our lips met, the applause of the chapel erupted around us like thunder—a celebration not of an empire’s merger, but of a family reborn from the ashes.
