Chapter 3 - Shadows in the West Wing

The sun had fully dipped below the horizon by the time I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the mansion. The grand foyer was dimly lit, casting long, dramatic shadows across the marble floors.

Instead of retreating to the safety of the east wing, my feet carried me instinctively toward the opposite side of the house—toward the forbidden territory of the west wing.

For three months, I had respected the unspoken boundary. I had never crossed the threshold into Ethan’s domain without a formal invitation or a direct summons. But tonight, the suffocating mystery of his sudden surveillance had pushed me past the point of caution.

The hallway outside Ethan’s private study was quiet, smelling faintly of expensive cedarwood, aged bourbon, and ozone. A thin strip of golden light spilled out from beneath the heavy oak door.

I walked up to the door and raised my hand to knock, but stopped dead.

The door wasn't fully latched. It was cracked open by half an inch.

“...I’m telling you, boss, the Italian syndicate isn't buying the silence,” Derek’s voice hissed from inside, laced with tight, coiled panic. “If they figured out that the shipment leak came from our South Side docks, they’re going to trace it right back to the consolidation agreement. They’re going to come for Jane.”

My hand froze in mid-air. My breath caught in my lungs.

Silence stretched inside the study—a heavy, suffocating pause that seemed to last for hours.

When Ethan finally spoke, his voice wasn't cold or clinical like it was when he discussed business or contracts. It was dark, rough with suppressed fury, and laced with a terrifying edge of lethal violence.

“They won't touch her,” Ethan said slowly, every word punctuated with absolute, unyielding finality. “If anyone from the Italian syndicate even looks in the direction of the east wing, you make sure their bodies are at the bottom of Lake Michigan before sunrise. Do I make myself clear, Derek?”

Derek swallowed hard. “Crystal, boss. But... you’ve been keeping her entirely isolated. If they want to strike at you through your weak spot—!”

“She is not a weak spot,” Ethan cut him off, his voice rising dangerously. “She’s my wife. And anyone who thinks they can use her to get to me will find out very quickly what happens when you wake up a sleeping animal. Now get out.”

Heavy footsteps shuffled toward the door.

Panic surged through my veins. I spun around on my heel, rushing down the dark hallway just as the study door clicked open behind me.

“Jane.”

Ethan’s deep, commanding voice stopped me in my tracks six feet away from the corridor intersection.

I closed my eyes for a single second, inhaling deeply to steady my racing pulse, before turning slowly to face him.

Ethan stood in the doorway of his study, his jacket discarded, his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms to reveal lean, powerful muscle. His sharp gray eyes locked onto mine, burning with a mix of fierce intensity and guarded surprise.

“You’re out of your wing,” he said, his tone carefully neutral, though his chest rose and fell with a slightly elevated rhythm.

“I was taking a walk,” I replied, my voice holding steady despite the storm raging inside my head. I stepped closer, lifting my chin to meet his gaze directly. “And then I noticed that your men have turned my daily walk into an armed escort drill. Care to explain why my husband suddenly cares whether I get fresh air?”

Ethan walked slowly down the hall toward me, his movements fluid and predatory, like a large cat closing the distance. He stopped just two feet away, towering over me, the sheer physical presence of him filling the space between us.

“The city isn't safe right now, Jane,” he said quietly, his gray eyes searching my face as if trying to read every secret hidden behind my expression. “There are... complications. Business disputes.”

“Business disputes,” I repeated, a bitter, humorless smile touching my lips. “Is that what you call it when your enemies start tracing leaks back to our wedding? When marrying me turns out to be the target painted squarely on my back?”

Ethan’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle feathered violently in his cheek. His hand twitched at his side, as if fighting the urge to reach out and touch me.

“You weren't supposed to be part of the war, Jane,” he muttered, his voice dropping into a low, raw register that stripped away every layer of his usual armored composure. “You were supposed to stay in the east wing, safe, out of sight, and untouched by any of this.”

“Well, tough luck, Ethan,” I fired back, stepping even closer until I could feel the heat radiating off his chest. “You made me your wife. You tied your empire to my father’s name. You don't get to treat me like a piece of fragile china to be locked away in a glass case the moment things get dangerous!”

For a heartbeat, Ethan didn't move. He stared down at me, his chest heaving, the icy mask completely shattered, revealing the burning, chaotic core of a man who was fighting a war on a dozen fronts—and terrified of losing the one thing he had never expected to care about.

Then, before I could process the movement, Ethan’s hands reached out. His strong, warm fingers gripped my upper arms, pulling me forward with sudden, desperate urgency until my body crashed against his solid chest.

“You have no idea what you’re playing with, Jane,” he growled softly against my hair, his embrace fierce and unyielding. “If anything happened to you… I would burn this entire city to ash to trace the person responsible.”

May you like

I froze in his arms, the anger and defiance melting away, replaced by a sudden, terrifying warmth. He didn't want me just for an heir. He didn't view me merely as a contract.

He was terrified of losing me. And in that terrifying, electric embrace, I knew that the game between us had just changed forever.
