Chapter 8 - CHECKMATE

Nathaniel adjusted Lily on his hip. He didn't even bother taking the microphone from Julian’s hand. He simply spoke into the room, his low, powerful voice cutting cleanly through the chaos.

“Julian,” Nathaniel said calmly. “You always were terrible at accounting.”

Julian’s smile faltered slightly. “Nathaniel, deflection won't save you tonight. The SEC has already been notified of the missing funds—”

“The SEC has indeed been notified,” Nathaniel interrupted smoothly. “Specifically, they were notified three hours ago when Evelyn Park submitted a four-hundred-page forensic report detailing the exact routing of those forty million dollars.”

Nathaniel gestured toward the massive decorative LED displays behind the stage.

The screens flickered, flashing from the corporate logo to a dense, color-coded map of offshore banking networks. At the top of the diagram, highlighted in bright red, was the master account holder: J. VANCE / VANGUARD APEX LLC.

The ballroom went dead silent.

“You spent the last six months stealing from the company you helped build,” Nathaniel said, stepping closer to Julian. “You used stolen administrative credentials—credentials belonging to my late wife—to siphon funds into shell accounts in Grand Cayman, hoping to manufacture a crisis that would tank our stock so you could launch a hostile takeover.”

Julian’s face drained of all color. His hands began to shake, the microphone trembling in his grip. “This... this is a forgery! A cheap trick!”

“The federal warrants were signed at 4:00 PM today, Julian,” Evelyn’s voice chimed in as she stepped forward from the crowd, holding a satellite phone. “FBI agents are currently standing outside the front gates.”

Two tall men in dark suits stepped quietly through the heavy double oak doors of the mansion, pulling badges from their suit pockets.

The glass microphone slipped from Julian Vance’s numb fingers, shattering against the marble stage floor with a loud, metallic clatter—echoing the exact sound of the broken wineglass from a week prior.

As security escorted the disgraced former board member through the silent, shocked crowd, Julian turned back to stare at Nathaniel one last time.

Nathaniel didn't gloat. He didn't shout. He simply stood tall, holding his daughter, watching his enemy fall with absolute, ice-cold finality.
