Chapter 6 - THE SHADOW OF GALA NIGHT

Thursday evening arrived with a heavy downpour of autumn rain that drummed against the tall glass windows of the Cross estate. Despite the storm outside, the interior of the mansion was a vision of opulent luxury.
Strings of golden fairy lights draped across the grand staircase. Valets in crisp black uniforms lined the long driveway, opening doors for senators, foreign diplomats, tech moguls, and Wall Street titans. A string quartet played softly near the grand piano in the foyer.
Nathaniel stood at the top of the marble staircase, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo with a black bow tie. He looked every bit the dark king of Boston finance—imposing, flawless, and terrifyingly distant.
Beside him, Evelyn adjusted her silk evening gown. “Julian just arrived. He’s down near the fountain with the representatives from the Wall Street Journal.”
Nathaniel’s eyes swept the crowded ballroom below until they locked onto Julian Vance. Julian was holding a glass of champagne, holding court among three mid-tier shareholders, smiling with the fake, polished warmth of a predator before a strike.
“Is everything in place?” Nathaniel asked softly.
“The media feeds are live,” Evelyn confirmed. “The security team has blocked all side exits. The moment you give the signal, the forensic audit files will be broadcast directly to every screen in this room and sent to the SEC enforcement division.”
“Good,” Nathaniel murmured.
Downstairs, Julian Vance looked up, catching Nathaniel’s eye. Julian raised his champagne glass in a mock toast, a subtle, arrogant sneer playing on his lips.
Before Nathaniel could descend the stairs, Rosa pulled him aside into the secondary corridor.
“Mr. Cross,” Rosa said anxiously. “Lily won't sleep. The noise from the quartet is keeping her up, and she keeps pulling at her dress.”
Nathaniel walked down the corridor to the nursery. Inside, Lily was standing in her crib, wearing a tiny white lace party dress with a pink ribbon. She looked utterly exhausted, her face flushed red, big tears spilling over her chubby cheeks.
When she saw Nathaniel, she reached her arms out, letting out a small, pitiful whimpering sound.
“Come here, little girl,” Nathaniel said softly, reaching into the crib and lifting her up against his tuxedo jacket.
Lily immediately pressed her wet, tear-stained face into the crisp white fabric of his shirt, her tiny hands clutching tightly at his silk lapels. Nathaniel rocked her gently, pacing back and forth across the soft nursery rug, completely unconcerned that she was ruining a four-thousand-dollar custom suit.
“You don't like parties either, huh?” Nathaniel whispered, pressing a soft kiss against her soft curls. “Don't worry. This one will be over very soon.”

Downstairs, the chime of a crystal glass sounded, echoing through the grand hall. Julian Vance was calling the room to order.
It was time.
