Chapter 7 - The Crumbling Pillars

By Sunday morning, the Boston legal community was in a state of quiet convulsion. The Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly had put out a rare digital weekend bulletin: *Federal Ethics Inquiry Launched into AUSA Carter Sterling; SEC Confirms Active Subpoenas for Sterling Vantage Capital.*

Inside the Sterling family penthouse on Commonwealth Avenue, the atmosphere was like a morgue after an explosion.

William Sterling sat at the center of the walnut dining table, surrounded by manila file folders, printouts of Delaware corporate registries, and half-empty glasses of bourbon. His tie was loosened, his hair unwashed, and the red veins in his eyes mapped out seventy-two hours of panic.

"They're going to freeze the domestic escrow accounts by Monday morning," William muttered, his voice hoarse. He dragged a trembling hand across his stubbled jaw. "The SEC attorney on the warrant... it wasn't a mid-level investigator. It was the regional director. Marcus Thorne signed the referral himself."

Ashley sat on the sofa, scrolling through her phone. Her face was pale, stripped of the smug superiority she had worn when mocking Emily at the dinner table. "My Instagram comments are flooded," she said, her voice climbing into hysteria. "The junior committee for the Symphony Gala just emailed me. They've removed me from the host list. They said my presence would be 'incompatible with the dignified tone of the evening.' Mother, do you hear me? They threw me off the committee!"

Barbara did not answer. She was sitting in a high-backed armchair, staring blankly out the arched windows toward the Charles River. Her designer blouse was rumpled, her face sunken. Since returning from Cambridge the night before, she had barely spoken four sentences.

"Be quiet, Ashley," Carter snapped from the doorway.

Carter looked like a ghost of the ambitious young prosecutor who had swaggered into the Department of Justice six months ago. His tailored suit was wrinkled, his eyes sunken into bruised hollows. He hadn't slept since the United States Marshals had escorted him out of the Moakley federal courthouse, taking his government laptop, his keycard, and his credentials before colleagues he had lunch with only days earlier.

"Why shouldn't I speak?" Ashley shrieked, jumping up from the sofa. "This is your fault! You brought that girl into our family! You told us she was a nobody! You said her father was some pathetic clerk who worked in the basement of the courthouse!"

"I didn't know!" Carter yelled back, his voice cracking with humiliation. "She never told me! When she talked about him, she said he reviewed paperwork at the courthouse! How was I supposed to know Arthur Vance was her father?"

"Because you never bothered to ask," William growled, slamming his fist down on the table, making the crystal glasses jump. "You spent four years with the girl, Carter! Four years she typed your briefs, four years she paid for your bar review, four years she washed your clothes, and you never once asked about her family because you were too busy basking in your own reflection! And you—" William turned his furious glare onto Barbara. "You had to slap her! You had to offer her fifty thousand dollars like a common streetwalker, while her father presides over every single federal appeal from Maine to Rhode Island!"

"She was a threat to this family," Barbara whispered, her voice dead, eyes fixed on the gray river outside. "She was taking him away from us. She was going to trap him."

"Trap him?" William roared, his face purpling. "She was the only thing standing between Carter and his own incompetence! And now? The grand jury is impaneled. Do you know what they found in our offshore filings? The Delaware LLC we used to shield the Cape Cod estate—Arthur Vance's clerks didn't miss a single shell. Thorne's office has bank statements from Zurich dating back to 2018. They have us on tax evasion, securities manipulation, and wire fraud!"

The front buzzer rang.

The sharp, abrasive sound cut through the shouting like a razor. Carter froze. Ashley dropped her phone onto the plush rug. William’s hands tightened on the edge of the dining table until his knuckles turned chalk-white.

Carter walked slowly toward the intercom on the wall. He pressed the button with a finger that would not stop shaking. "Yes?"

"Carter Sterling?" a curt, professional voice crackled through the speaker. "This is Special Agent Davies, Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have an arrest warrant for William Sterling, and grand jury subpoenas for Barbara and Carter Sterling. Buzz us up, or we will have the building superintendent breach the door."

Carter released the button. He turned around to face his parents.

William closed his eyes and slowly bowed his head toward the tabletop, his breath leaving him in a ragged, defeated shudder.

Barbara did not move. A single tear tracked through the heavy foundation on her cheek, carving a white line through the gray mask of her ruined pride.
