Chapter 7 - THE RESTRUCTURING OF AN EMPIRE

Over the next three months, the financial and social landscape of Greenwich underwent a seismic shift.
Margaret Ashworth quietly departed for the family’s private estate in the south of France. The press reported it as a peaceful retirement, but the corporate world knew the truth: Julian had stripped her of all voting rights and seized full control of the Ashworth Trust.
I officially resigned from my housekeeping job.
Julian bought a breathtaking historic home overlooking the Sound, far away from the oppressive, cold luxury of his mother’s estate. He hired a private legal team to restore my family’s records, set up a multi-million-dollar trust fund for Sophia, and established a non-profit foundation in my name to support single mothers facing housing insecurity.
One evening in late November, the first snowfall of the season began to dust the trees outside our new home.
Inside the warm, firelit living room, Sophia was playing on a thick plush rug with a wooden train set.
Julian sat at the dining table, surrounded by legal documents. He looked up as I walked in, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, carrying two mugs of hot chocolate.
“You’re working late,” I said, setting a mug beside his papers.
“Just finalizing the paperwork for the Reyes-Ashworth Foundation,” Julian said, reaching out to pull me onto his lap. “We just approved the funding for three new family shelters in New Haven.”
I rested my head against his shoulder, listening to the peaceful hum of the fire.
“It feels surreal,” I admitted softly. “A year ago, I was counting quarters to buy milk. Now...”
“Now you’re where you were always meant to be,” Julian said firmly, turning my face to meet his gaze. “With me.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
My heart skipped a beat.
Julian opened the box to reveal a magnificent ring—a vintage, cushion-cut sapphire surrounded by brilliant diamonds.
“I bought this ring two years ago in Maine,” Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I carried it in my pocket the day my boat capsized. I saved it through everything... because I knew, somehow, someday, I would find my way back to you.”
He looked into my eyes with complete, unreserved devotion.
“Elena Reyes, will you marry me and let me spend the rest of my life building a real home for our family?”
May you like
Tears of absolute happiness filled my eyes.
“Yes,” I whispered, kissing him with all the love and passion that had survived two years of dark silence. “Yes, Julian, yes.”
