Chapter 9 - The Airport Reality Check

December 20 arrived with a biting, clear-blue winter morning that crunched underfoot.

At 4:30 a.m., while the rest of the city was still wrapped in sleep, my phone began vibrating continuously on the bedside table. Call after call from Mom, followed by frantic texts from Kelsey, and finally a gruff voicemail from my father demanding to know why the airline agent at the ticket counter had just told them their confirmation numbers did not exist.

I didn’t answer any of them. Instead, I pulled the blankets tighter around Ren, who was sleeping soundly, dreaming of sandy beaches and barking sea lions.

Later that morning, my family stood stranded at the departure terminal of the municipal airport, staring at boarding passes that had dissolved into thin air. According to Renee—whose cousin worked at the airport check-in desk—Mom had tried to hand the agent Maryanne Hail’s passport, assuming the ticket transfer she and Kelsey engineered behind my back was a simple administrative formality. The agent had politely informed them that the tickets had been canceled and refunded to the original purchaser four weeks prior.

My phone rang one final time around noon. I let it go to voicemail. Mom’s voice, tight with panic and unadulterated fury, crackled through the speaker: “Darcy, where are you? The Hails are standing right here, and you’ve made absolute fools of us! Call your father this instant!”

I listened to the message once, deleted it, and blocked all three of their numbers.

That afternoon, Ren and I drove down to the rugged Oregon coast, just two hours away. We checked into a cozy, oceanfront cabin where the winter wind howled against the glass and the salt spray coated the windows.

We didn’t have a thirty-thousand-dollar luxury villa, and there were no wealthy in-laws or critical social arbiters within a hundred miles. But as we sat wrapped in heavy woolen blankets on the wooden viewing deck overlooking the crashing Pacific waves, a massive pod of wild sea lions hauled themselves onto the rocks below, barking and howling at the sky with magnificent, unfiltered joy.

Ren stood up on her tiptoes, cupped her hands around her mouth, and barked right back at them, her laughter ringing out clear and bright over the roar of the ocean.
