Chapter 8 - The Cancellation

Early Thursday morning, November 20, the house was dead silent. The digital display on my office space heater ticked softly as it warmed the cold air. Outside, the first frost of winter was silvering the grass.

It was exactly November 20—the final, absolute deadline for a full refund on the Kauai villa.

I sat down at my desk, pulled up the property management portal, and clicked the bold red button: CANCEL RESERVATION. Within sixty seconds, a confirmation email pinged in my inbox confirming a full refund of $18,000 back to my credit card.

Without pausing to catch my breath, I opened the airline app and selected all six refundable tickets. I hit CANCEL FLIGHTS, watching as the system processed the return of another $12,000. Thirty thousand dollars, wiped clean from their ledger in less than five minutes.

At exactly 6:52 a.m., I drafted a single, concise text message to my mother:

The Kauai trip is canceled. All six seats and the house. Ren and I will make our own Christmas.

Ten minutes later, my phone lit up with a furious reply from Mom: Don’t be dramatic. We’ll see you at the airport on the 20th.

May you like

Dad chimed in a minute later: You are throwing away thirty thousand dollars over a child's tantrum. You’ll regret this.

I didn’t reply to either of them. I saved the screenshots, slid my phone into my pocket, walked out to unlock the front doors of Little Elm Early Learning, and turned on the lights for the day.
