Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH CLAIRE NEVER KNEW

The hospital hallway was silent.
Claire sat on the bed.
I stood beside the window.
Neither of us spoke.
Thomas's words echoed in my head.
She isn't your daughter.
It couldn't be true.
It couldn't.
I remembered Claire as a baby.
Her first steps.
Her first birthday.
The night she had pneumonia.
The day she graduated.
The first time she called me Dad.
No secret could erase twenty-four years.
But biology could complicate everything.
Claire finally spoke.
“Do you believe him?”
I turned.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Then she asked:
“Why did you hesitate?”
I had no answer.
Before I could speak, Detective Morales entered.
“We found Thomas.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“He's in custody.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Claire stared at me.
“What did he say?”
Morales looked at both of us.
“He claims your family was targeted before you were born.”
“Why?”
“Your father discovered an illegal financial network.”
“What kind?”
“Identity theft. Fraud. Financial coercion. Several disappearances.”
I sat down.
“What does that have to do with Claire?”
Morales placed a folder on the table.
“We ran a preliminary search.”
He opened it.
Inside was an old hospital record.
My name was listed as the father.
My wife's name as the mother.
And beside Claire's name—
A handwritten notation.
ADOPTION SEALED.
I stared.
“No.”
Claire's face went blank.
“What does that mean?”
Morales looked at me.
“I think your parents wanted to protect you.”
Claire whispered:
“Dad?”
I couldn't speak.
She stood.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“You swear?”
“I swear.”
She began crying.
Morales closed the folder.
“There’s more.”
He placed another document on the table.
A photograph.
A woman holding a newborn baby.
The woman was my wife.
The baby was Claire.
But standing behind them was another woman.
Olivia recognized her.
“That's Sarah Carter.”
I looked at her.
“Who?”
“My mother.”
Olivia's voice trembled.
“She was the nurse who helped your wife.”
Claire stared at her.
“Why?”
Olivia shook her head.
“She wasn't supposed to give you the baby.”
I felt the room spinning.
“What are you saying?”
Olivia looked at me.
“Claire wasn't adopted because your wife couldn't have children.”
She paused.
“She was adopted because her biological parents were being hunted.”
Claire whispered:
“Who were they?”
Olivia looked toward the door.
Then she said:
“Your mother was one of them.”
Claire's face crumpled.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“My wife?”
Olivia nodded.
“She wasn't your biological wife either.”
Silence.
The world seemed to tilt.
Twenty-four years of memories suddenly felt like pages from a book someone else had written.
Then the door opened.
A nurse rushed inside.
“Detective Morales?”
“What?”
“There’s been an emergency downstairs.”
“What kind?”
“A man was found unconscious in the parking garage.”
“Who?”
The nurse looked at me.
“Martin Hale.”
My stomach dropped.
“What happened?”
“He was stabbed.”
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Is he alive?”
The nurse hesitated.
“Barely.”
Morales immediately moved toward the door.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?” I asked.
He looked at Claire.
“Ethan escaped custody.”
Claire went completely still.
“How?”
Morales didn't answer.
Because at that exact moment, Claire's hospital room television flickered on by itself.
The screen showed a live security-camera feed.
A dark hallway.
Then Ethan stepped into view.
His face was bruised.
His shirt was stained with blood.
He looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
A message appeared beneath him.
CLAIRE — ASK YOUR FATHER WHO YOUR REAL FATHER IS.
Claire screamed.
May you like
The screen went black.
And somewhere beneath the hospital, a fire alarm began to howl.
