Chapter 1 - THE RED LIGHT

The officer reached for the recorder.

Ethan moved.

It was the smallest movement, barely more than a twitch of his shoulder, but I saw it.

So did the officer.

“Don’t.”

One word.

Ethan stopped.

The recorder continued blinking red.

Claire lay on the concrete behind us, her face turned toward the open doorway. Her eyes were half closed, but when she saw the recorder in the officer’s hand, something changed in her expression.

Fear.

Not of Ethan.

Of what was on that device.

“Dad,” she whispered.

I dropped beside her.

“I’m here.”

Her fingers found mine.

They were cold.

Far too cold.

“I didn’t know what else to do,” she whispered.

“You don’t have to explain anything right now.”

“But the recorder…”

“I know.”

She squeezed my hand.

“Don’t let him take it.”

The officer holding the recorder looked toward his partner.

“Evidence bag.”

His partner nodded.

Ethan finally spoke.

“That belongs to my wife.”

The officer turned.

“You can explain ownership after we determine whether it contains evidence of a crime.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“This is a family matter.”

“No,” the officer said. “It stopped being a family matter when we got a 911 call about a pregnant woman being locked in a shed for three days.”

Ethan looked at me.

The arrogance had disappeared.

What remained was calculation.

I recognized that look.

He was trying to figure out what we knew.

More importantly, he was trying to figure out what Claire knew.

The officer crouched beside her.

“Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”

“Claire Bennett.”

“Are you pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“How far along?”

“Four months.”

“Do you know what happened to you?”

She swallowed.

“My husband locked me in here.”

Ethan immediately interrupted.

“She was threatening to hurt herself.”

Claire's eyes snapped toward him.

“No.”

The officer looked at Ethan.

“Sir, I didn't ask you.”

Ethan stepped back.

Claire continued.

“He took my phone.”

Her voice shook.

“He took my purse. He smashed my phone because I tried to call my dad.”

I looked at the broken phone lying behind the plastic bins.

“And the knife?” I asked.

Claire closed her eyes.

“He put it there.”

Ethan laughed nervously.

“That knife was already in the shed.”

Claire stared at him.

“You told me to use it.”

Silence.

The officer's expression hardened.

“What exactly did he tell you?”

Claire's breathing became shallow.

“He said nobody would hear me scream out here.”

Ethan shook his head.

“She’s confused.”

“No,” Claire whispered.

Then she looked directly at me.

“Dad, I recorded him.”

The officer raised the recorder.

“Is this what you recorded?”

Claire nodded.

“I knew he would lie.”

Ethan took a step toward her.

“You planned this.”

The officer immediately stepped between them.

“Back up.”

Ethan raised his hands.

“I didn't touch her.”

“You're going to remain right where you are.”

An ambulance arrived moments later.

Two paramedics rushed inside.

As they lifted Claire onto the stretcher, she grabbed my sleeve.

“Dad.”

“I’m coming.”

“Don't leave me alone.”

“I won't.”

The paramedic looked at me.

“You can ride with her.”

I climbed into the ambulance.

Before the doors closed, I looked back.

Ethan stood beside the police cruiser.

One officer was speaking to him.

The other was holding the evidence bag containing the recorder.

Ethan looked at me.

There was no anger in his face now.

Only fear.

And somehow, that frightened me more.

---

At the hospital, doctors discovered Claire was severely dehydrated.

Her blood pressure was dangerously low.

They monitored the baby immediately.

For nearly twenty minutes, nobody told me anything.

I sat in the hallway with my hands clasped together, staring at the floor.

Then a doctor came through the doors.

“She’s stable.”

I stood.

“And the baby?”

“We detected a heartbeat.”

My knees almost gave out.

“Is the baby okay?”

“For now, yes. But this was serious. She needs observation.”

I closed my eyes.

Thank God.

Then the doctor added quietly,

“She needs protection as much as medical care.”

I understood exactly what he meant.

When I entered Claire’s room, she was awake.

Her face looked smaller than I remembered.

“Dad.”

I sat beside her.

“I’m here.”

She stared at the ceiling.

“I knew you’d come.”

“I wish I had come sooner.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“What?”

She turned toward me.

“I didn't want you to see what he was doing.”

My stomach tightened.

“How long?”

She didn't answer.

“Claire.”

“Months.”

The word barely escaped her lips.

I felt something inside me break.

“What did he do?”

She shook her head.

“I'll tell you everything.”

Then she looked toward the door.

“But not here.”

“Why?”

“Because Ethan has someone inside this hospital.”

I froze.

“What?”

Claire reached beneath her pillow.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

On it was a single sentence.

HE KNOWS WHEN YOU TALK.

I looked toward the hallway.

May you like

And suddenly the hospital didn't feel safe anymore.
