Chapter 8 - THE BREACH

The blast door groaned as hydraulic rams slammed into the six-inch steel locks.

Smoke poured through the vents, smelling of CS gas and cordite.

“Masks on!” Miller shouted, tossing gas masks to Alvarez and Chen.

I refused mine. I wanted the men who kicked down that door to see my eyes. I wanted them to look into the face of the daughter their system had tried to incinerate.

The steel hinges gave way with a deafening screech of ripping metal. The heavy blast door fell inward, crashing down onto the concrete floor with a sound like thunder.

Laser sights cut through the dense chemical smoke—red and green dots dancing across my chest, across Foster’s four-star insignia, across Alvarez’s raised hands.

“Down on the ground! Do it now! Hands where we can see them!” half a dozen operators screamed, advancing in an impenetrable wedge behind ballistic shields.

Admiral Foster stepped forward, standing at full parade rest, his hands folded behind his back.

“I am Admiral James Foster, Commander of Naval Special Warfare Development Group,” he said, his voice cutting through their shouts like a broadsword. “You are participating in an unlawful, treasonous military action against an active flag officer and a protected congressional witness. Step down your weapons, or every single man in this stack will hang from a yardarm for treason.”

The lead operator hesitated. His rifle drifted downward an inch.

Behind the tactical stack, a man in an expensive charcoal suit pushed through the operators, an earpiece pressed into his ear: Deputy Attorney General Marcus Vance.

“Shoot the drives!” Vance screamed, his face white, his voice cracking with utter hysteria. “Destroy the server arrays! Secure the girl!”

“Stand down!” a new voice roared from the entrance tunnel.

Four more men entered the bunker. But they weren't tactical contractors. They were federal agents from the Office of the Inspector General, accompanied by thirty armed Marines in woodland camouflage, led by the Provost Marshal of the United States Navy himself.

“Deputy Attorney General Vance,” the Provost Marshal announced, brandishing an unsealed warrant stamped with the red seal of the United States Supreme Court. “Step away from the witnesses. By order of the Chief Justice and the Senate Judiciary Committee, your executive authority is suspended. You are under arrest for high treason and conspiracy to commit capital murder.”

Vance stared at the Marines, then turned around to see his own HRT operators slowly lowering their rifles.

Behind them, his phone began vibrating relentlessly. The notification alerts were ringing continuously.

The broadcast had already been viewed by sixty million people.
