Chapter 7 - THE WORLD WATCHES

At 0415 hours, across the eastern seaboard of the United States, every morning television program, every streaming news affiliate, and every digital military network feed was abruptly overridden by an emergency broadcast signal.
Screens flickered. The familiar three-tone emergency alert system sounded.
Then, my face appeared on millions of television sets, laptop monitors, and smartphone notifications from New York to San Diego.
I was wearing Admiral Foster’s four-star dress tunic over my plain black undershirt, my face lit by the harsh, unvarnished halogen bulb of the Coast Guard bunker.
Behind me, the text logs of `ORION AUTONOMOUS STRIKE PROTOCOL // ALGORITHM: HOUND-6` scrolled down a continuous split-screen.
“My name is Lieutenant Maya Leair, United States Navy,” I began, my voice calm, unwavering, carrying into the homes of ordinary Americans drinking their morning coffee.
“Six months ago, six United States service members—Specialist Marcus Miller, Sergeant Thomas Hayes, Corporal Lucas Rodriguez, Private First Class Jerome Washington, Specialist Daniel Kowalski, and Lance Corporal Sean O’Brian—were murdered in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
“The Pentagon told their mothers and fathers that they died fighting the enemies of our nation. That was a lie.
“They were executed by an autonomous guidance system manufactured by Orion Tactical Systems, under the direct authorization of my father, Colonel Daniel Leair, and General Arthur Harris. The strike was a live-fire demonstration to market a deniable assassination system to foreign contractors.”
I leaned closer to the camera lens.
“As I speak, fifty federal agents under the direction of corrupt officials in the Department of Justice are outside the doors of this facility, preparing to execute me, my attorney, and the whistleblower who brought this truth to light.
“If the feed cuts out, you will know we were murdered. If I die this morning, do not mourn me. Find the mothers of Marcus Miller and Thomas Hayes. Ask them why their sons were sold for sixty million dollars in blood money.
“The unredacted source code, the telemetry logs, and the Swiss banking account records are now uploading to forty-eight public, distributed open-source repositories worldwide. You cannot delete the truth.”
I nodded at Chen.
He struck the final key. The screen behind me turned green as two gigabytes of classified treason were blasted out across every public cloud server on the planet.

Outside, the first concussion grenade shattered the heavy reinforced glass of the bunker’s upper vents.
