Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Three days later, in a secure holding room at the downtown federal detention center, I finally came face-to-face with Derek again.

He looked entirely different from the charismatic, immaculately groomed CEO who had laughed as he shoved my face into a wedding cake. Dressed in standard orange detention garb, his hair unstyled, his shoulders slumped in defeat, he looked small, bitter, and profoundly broken.

The heavy glass partition separated us, but the built-in intercom system carried our voices clearly.

Derek stared at me through the reinforced glass, his eyes bloodshot and filled with a venomous mix of disbelief and hatred.

“You ruined my life,” he whispered hoarsely through the speaker. “You actually destroyed everything.”

“I didn't destroy anything, Derek,” I replied, my voice calm and steady. “I just stopped letting you destroy me.”

He slammed his fist against the glass partition, though the heavy material didn't even vibrate. “I loved you! In my own way, I gave you stability!”

“You gave me a cage,” I corrected instantly. “You gave me bruises, psychological abuse, and a front-row seat to your greed. You thought my grief made me stupid. You thought because I was quiet, I was helpless.”

Derek’s face twisted in agony. “What do you want, Claire? Do you want all my personal money? Done. Do you want me to sign a full confession? Just tell me what it takes to make this go away.”

“It doesn't go away, Derek,” I said, standing up and picking up my briefcase. “The federal charges will proceed. The financial restitution will be fully executed. And you will spend the next several years reflecting on the exact moment you decided to underestimate the woman you tried to break.”

He pressed his face against the glass, shouting curses and threats as the guard stepped forward to escort him back to his cell.

I didn't look back. I turned around and walked out of the detention facility into the crisp autumn air, breathing in the scent of absolute freedom.
