Chapter 7 - Patricia’s Panic and Family Betrayal

By evening, the walls were closing in on the Vance family from every possible direction.

Derek’s high-priced defense lawyers had officially dropped him once they realized the ironclad nature of the prenuptial agreement and the federal wire fraud evidence compiled by Harper. Without access to his frozen assets, Derek couldn't afford a legal team capable of fighting the mountain of evidence stacking up against him.

Patricia, desperate to salvage what remained of her social standing and personal wealth, arrived unannounced at my father’s private estate—the historic brownstone on the Upper East Side where I had grown up, and which Derek had been trying to force me to sell for months.

I was sitting in my father’s old study, reviewing the preliminary restructuring reports, when the housekeeper knocked hesitantly on the open door.

“Mrs... Miss Sterling,” she corrected herself quickly, offering a warm, respectful smile. “Mrs. Vance is downstairs. She’s demanding to speak with you. She says it’s an emergency.”

“Send her up,” I replied calmly.

Patricia entered the study not with her usual haughty arrogance, but with a frantic, disheveled desperation. Her designer coat was wrinkled, her hair slightly out of place, and her eyes wide with unmasked panic.

“Claire,” she began, her voice dropping into a pleading, theatrical whine as she approached the desk. “Claire, darling, please. We need to talk reasonably. This has all gotten entirely out of hand.”

I didn't stand up. I didn't offer her a seat. I simply looked up from my papers and watched her with steady, unblinking eyes.

“Out of hand, Patricia?” I asked quietly. “You mean embezzlement, fraud, and physical assault got out of hand?”

“Derek is your husband!” she cried, wringing her manicured hands together. “Families don't do this to each other! If you press these federal charges, he will go to prison for a decade! Think of the scandal! Think of our name!”

“Your name was built on lies and stolen money,” I replied sharply. “And Derek isn't my husband in any meaningful sense of the word. He’s a criminal who thought he could break me, isolate me, and steal everything my father spent his entire life building.”

Patricia’s mask of polite desperation cracked instantly, revealing the vicious, calculating core beneath. Her face twisted into a snarl.

“You ungrateful little bitch!” she hissed, stepping closer to the desk. “You think you’ve won? You think a weak little girl like you can run Sterling Industries alone? Without us, you’re nothing! You’re just a grieving orphan playing dress-up in a dead man’s office!”

I stood up slowly, my height and posture commanding the entire room. I didn't raise my voice; I spoke with the quiet, chilling authority of a true executive.

“I am no longer the grieving orphan you and your son tried to exploit,” I said, looking down at her with absolute disdain. “And as of three minutes ago, my legal team has officially frozen the remaining family trusts associated with your name. Every penny you and Derek stole is going back into the company accounts. Every single asset.”

Patricia gasped, stepping back as if she had been physically struck. “You can't do that...”

“Watch me,” I replied softly. “Now, get out of my father’s house before I have you removed for trespassing.”

Defeated, humiliated, and stripped of her power, Patricia turned and fled down the hallway, her hurried footsteps echoing fading into the silence of the grand estate.
