Chapter 8 - The Ghost Speaks

Martha’s paralegal, a sharp-eyed young woman named Sarah, brought Emiliano a plate of warm pastries while Martha made three back-to-back phone calls. She was speaking to the district attorney’s office, the state child protective services bureau, and an investigator from the state department of revenue.

"We have them on federal wire fraud," Martha said into the receiver, her pen scribbling notes furiously on a yellow legal pad. "The trust was established under Delaware corporate law, but the funds were wired across state lines to a fictitious LLC in Daniel Sterling's name. It’s an open-and-shut RICO predicate. Issue the bench warrants immediately before they attempt to liquidate the remaining assets."

She slammed the receiver down, took a deep breath, and slid her laptop across the table toward me.

"There's someone who needs to see you," Martha said gently. "He’s been waiting eight years for this phone call."

The laptop screen lit up with an incoming video call.

My chest constricted until I couldn't breathe. My hand hovered over the trackpad, trembling so hard I could barely guide the cursor. I clicked *Accept*.

The screen flickered. A man’s face filled the monitor.

Julian.

Time had carved deeper lines around his mouth, and a faint, silver scar ran through his left eyebrow—the remnant of the car crash that had stolen him from me. But his eyes were the exact same warm, intelligent amber that I had fallen in love with under the college library lamps.

He stared at the screen, his chest rising and falling rapidly. For a long, agonizing moment, neither of us spoke.

"Clara," he whispered. His voice was deeper than I remembered, thick with unshed tears. "Clara, is it really you?"

A sob tore out of my throat, breaking through the wall of numbness that had held me together all morning. "Julian... she told me you left. She told me you took the money and called him a mistake."

Julian closed his eyes, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. When he opened them, they were wet with grief.

"I never took a dime, Clara. I was in a hospital bed with six broken ribs and a shattered pelvis. When I woke up, Teresa was standing over me. She threw medical discharge papers on my chest and told me you had terminated the pregnancy, that the sight of me made you sick, and that if I ever contacted you, Robert would use his judges to put me away."

"She forged the papers," I cried, wiping my face with the back of my sleeve. "She forged everything. The custody, the money... Julian, she hit him. She hit our son."

Julian’s face went dead, his amber eyes turning to pure flint. "Where are you?"

"I’m in Martha's office in Oakdale. We have the footage, Julian. We have all of it."

"Stay there," Julian commanded softly, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep it shook the speakers. "I’m sending two private security escorts to Martha’s office to bring you and Emiliano directly to the courthouse. Judge Harris is holding an emergency sealed hearing at eleven o’clock. Teresa and Robert are already in the building."

My blood ran cold. "They're at the courthouse?"

"They filed the emergency petition thirty minutes ago," Julian said, leaning closer to his camera. "They told the clerk that you abducted Emiliano and were suffering an acute psychotic break. Teresa brought three character witnesses and her attorney."

Julian paused, his gaze softening as he looked past my shoulder toward the conference room door where Emiliano was sitting.

"Clara... is he okay? Can I... can I see him?"

I turned toward the glass partition. Emiliano was coloring a picture of a sailboat, entirely unaware that the ghost who had haunted our lives was on the other side of the glass.

"Wait until you're here, Julian," I whispered. "Come get your family."

May you like

"I’m on my way," he said, and the screen went black.
