Chapter 10 - Retribution and Collapse

Judge William Harris was a man of seventy with snow-white hair and the weary, cynical eyes of a judge who had seen every conceivable permutation of human cruelty. He sat beneath the state seal, his spectacles perched on the tip of his nose, reviewing the thick stack of documents Martha had submitted electronically twenty minutes prior.

Teresa’s high-priced attorney, Arthur Vance (no relation to Julian), stood at the petitioner’s podium.

"Your Honor," Arthur began smoothly, "we are requesting an immediate summary transfer of temporary physical and legal custody of the minor, Emiliano Vance Sterling, to his maternal grandparents, Teresa and Robert Sterling. We have submitted affidavits attesting to the mother's unstable mental history, her lack of steady employment, and the disturbing domestic incident that occurred last night—"

"Mr. Vance," Judge Harris interrupted, not looking up from his files. "Did your clients inform you that there is high-definition audiovisual evidence of the 'domestic incident' that occurred last night?"

Arthur Vance blinked, caught off guard. He glanced back at Teresa. Teresa’s mouth tightened into a thin, bloodless line. "Your Honor, any home recordings taken without consent—"

"The recording was made by the interior security system registered in Clara Sterling's name," Martha Vance announced, standing tall at our table. "And under state statute 804, domestic surveillance evidence of a violent felony against a minor is fully admissible in emergency ex parte custody proceedings."

Judge Harris tapped a key on his bench monitor. The courtroom lights dimmed slightly.

The large flat-screen television mounted on the wood-paneled wall hummed to life.

The video played.

The dining room chandelier. The clinking glasses. And then, the explosion of violence.

The entire courtroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence as Teresa’s face filled the screen, twisted in rage, her hand delivering a sickening, echoing slap across Emiliano’s face. The audio picked up Emiliano’s piercing scream, followed by the sound of my father tackling me into the chair, and Daniel pinning my arms.

*“Hold her, Robert! Shut her up!”*

On the witness bench, a court stenographer gasped, her hands pausing over her keys.

Then came the conversation between Teresa and Daniel.

*“Clara will never agree to this.”*

*“She won't have a choice... I already took care of her signature.”*

*“The money Emiliano’s father has been sending all these years. What happens when Clara finds out?”*

*“Clara was never supposed to find out he’s been trying to get his son back.”*

The video cut to black.

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bones.

Judge Harris slowly removed his spectacles. He looked at Teresa Sterling. The cold, blistering disgust in the old judge's eyes made Teresa flinch for the first time in her life.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Harris said, his voice dangerously soft. "Do you have anything further to say on behalf of your clients?"

Arthur Vance looked at the green ledger sheets on his table, looked at Teresa’s pale, trembling face, and quietly closed his briefcase. "No, Your Honor. The defense rests."

"Your Honor, if I may," Teresa cried out, standing up from her chair, her hands clutching the mahogany rail. "You don't understand the context! That child was out of control! We have sacrificed everything for Clara! She was an unwed mother, an embarrassment to our family, and that man—" she pointed a shaking finger at Julian "—that man was a nobody who dared to taint our bloodline!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Sterling," Judge Harris warned.

"I will not sit down!" Teresa screeched, her voice cracking into the manic register of a narcissist whose kingdom had turned to ashes. "I built this family! Every dollar Julian Vance sent belonged to me for raising his bastard! Robert, tell him! Daniel, speak up!"

Daniel didn't speak. He lowered his head onto the defense table and began to sob openly.

Judge Harris struck his gavel with a force that sounded like a gunshot.

"Teresa Sterling and Robert Sterling," Judge Harris pronounced, his voice reverberating through the chamber. "Petition 402-B for emergency guardianship is dismissed with prejudice. Full, sole physical and legal custody of the minor, Emiliano Vance, is hereby awarded exclusively to his mother, Clara Sterling, with immediate effect."

He turned to the bailiff.

"Bailiff, take Teresa Sterling and Robert Sterling into custody. They are remanded without bail on charges of felony child abuse, assault and battery, felony forgery, and two counts of witness tampering. The clerk will immediately forward this dossier to the United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution under federal fraud and embezzlement statutes."

Two armed deputies stepped behind Teresa. As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists, she lunged toward our table, spitting like a rabid animal.

"You're nothing, Clara!" Teresa screamed, her hair falling loose from its elegant pins, revealing the monster underneath. "You hear me? You’re nothing without me! You’ll starve! I curse the day I gave birth to you!"

The deputies dragged her out the double doors, her hysterical shrieks echoing down the marble halls until the heavy doors slammed shut. Robert was led out behind her in silence, his head bowed, his hands cuffed behind his back, a broken, disgraced man.

Julian stood up from our table. He walked over to where I was sitting, kneeling beside Emiliano’s chair.

For the first time in eight years, the air in my lungs felt clean. It felt like oxygen instead of poison.

"It's over," I whispered, the tears finally flowing freely down my cheeks. "It's finally over."

May you like

Julian reached out, his warm, steady fingers covering my hand and Emiliano’s hand together. "No, Clara," he said softly, looking at our son with an ocean of devotion in his eyes. "It’s just beginning."
