Chapter 85 - The Silo at the Edge of the Abyss

We crossed the pasture under a sky that had turned an unnatural, bruised purple. The air was heavy with the smell of sulfur and ionized gas, the ground undulating beneath our boots like the deck of a ship in heavy seas. Every few hundred yards, fresh fissures opened in the topsoil, releasing jets of freezing steam that instantly frosted the dead grass.
The silo stood at the highest point of the north pasture, an iron-banded timber giant built by my great-grandfather. Inside, the dust smelled of dry grain and forty years of neglect, but bolted to the central post was Silas’s emergency radio rig—a hulking mass of vacuum tubes, military-surplus transformers, and a heavy copper bus-bar running straight down through the concrete floor into the bedrock.
Dad threw the massive knife-switch. The transformers hummed to life with an angry, blue-white spark, the vacuum tubes glowing orange in the gloom.
"The frequency dial is rusted!" Dad shouted over the rising roar outside. "It's locked at 410!"
I looked down at the obsidian fork in my hand. The micro-grooves were beginning to glow with a faint violet luminescence, vibrating so violently against my palm that my wrist went numb. "It doesn't need the dial! The fork is the oscillator!"
I jammed the base of the obsidian tuning fork directly into the copper terminal bus-bar.
A blinding flash of violet lightning leaped from the radio housing, arcing across the silo’s timber frame. The entire structure shrieked, iron bands groaning under immense magnetic tension. Dad was thrown back against the grain bins, his shirt smoking where a stray spark had scorched the fabric.
I seized the iron tire iron and swung with every ounce of strength I had left, striking the obsidian fork’s tines directly on the node.
*CLANG.*
The sound that erupted from the silo wasn't an ordinary chime. It was a physical shockwave, a deafening, pure acoustic ring that bypassed the ear entirely and detonated inside the brain. The air rippled visibly, concentric rings of violet light exploding outward through the silo’s slatted walls, sweeping across the pasture toward the watermill.

Half a mile away, the mechanical drone of the Foundation’s drilling rigs hitched.
Then came the screams of tearing steel.
