Chapter 52 - The Sirens of Blackwood Hollow

The sirens from the valley floor did not sound in clean, synchronized intervals. They wailed in broken, discordant intervals—three long mechanical shrieks followed by the stuttering static of backup generators tripping across the county line. Down along the low meadows, the lights of Oakhaven flickered once, twice, and died, plunging the hollow into an eerie, suffocating blackness broken only by the headlights of Thomas’s armored truck and the pale, ghost-like vapor rising from our pasture.

"Dad!" I screamed, lunging toward the buckling porch.

The timber floor tilted violently at a thirty-degree angle. Through the cloud of white dust, my father emerged on his knees. His forehead was cut, blood dripping down into his white beard, but clutched tightly against his chest was the black metal lockbox and the leather-bound ledger wrapped in plastic.

I caught his arm as the porch floor disintegrated beneath his heels, dragging him over the fractured stone wall just as the entire kitchen structure dropped ten feet down into the expanding abyss. The air was sucked into the void with a hollow *whoosh*, followed by an ominous rumble of rushing water miles below.

"Got it," Dad panted, spitting plaster and dirt. "I got the seal. I got her ledger."

Before we could catch our breath, twin beams of high-intensity halogen light knifed through the dark pines at the base of the driveway. Two heavy-duty contractor pickups, their grilles reinforced with welded steel pipe, tore through the split-rail fence.

"Julian," Thomas hissed, stepping back into the shadow of his command vehicle and racking the slide of an automatic pistol. "He knows the core is compromised. He’s not trying to stop the breach—he’s coming to purge the records before the federal monitoring station in Raleigh picks up the seismic signature."

The trucks slid to a halt on the wet grass, doors flying open. Four men in dark tactical gear stepped out, assault carbines held at the low-ready, followed by Julian Vance. Julian was unkempt, his tailored trench coat smeared with yellow clay from the drilling site, his eyes bloodshot with manic fury.

"Thomas!" Julian bellowed over the howl of the steam. "Shut down the telemetry link! The seismic sensors at the state capitol are already pinging the anomaly! Kill the uplink or we’re all going to federal prison for the rest of our lives!"

"It’s over, Julian!" Thomas yelled back from behind the armored door. "Chamber Nine is breached! The water pressure is climbing past three thousand PSI! If we don’t vent the subterranean bypass from the lower pump house within twenty minutes, there won't be a Blackwood County left to prosecute!"
