Chapter 119 - The Master Key

Clara saw her mother and let out a muffled scream behind the heavy silver duct tape covering her mouth.

Eleanor took a frantic step forward, her voice rising in a hysterical shriek: "Clara! Oh God, Clara!"

"Stay back, Eleanor!" I roared, throwing an arm across her chest to hold her in place.

Specimen 02 didn't even look at her. His gaze was entirely locked on mine. In his left hand, he held a small, black radio-frequency detonator.

"The charge is C-4 military grade," the duplicate explained with clinical precision, his voice echoing in the vast, hollow marble lobby. "Thomas is currently upstairs on thirty-eight, transferring the final thirty billion dollars into the sovereign bearer account in Dubai. The transaction requires twelve more minutes to achieve irrevocable ledger finality. My instructions are simple: if you step within ten feet of this elevator before that timer hits zero, I depress this switch, and your niece’s pulmonary cavity is vaporized."

"Thomas doesn't have thirty billion dollars," I said, keeping my voice utterly level, stepping slowly to the center of the lobby, directly into his line of sight.

The duplicate smiled thinly. "Always the audit, Julian. Always the numbers. You think you're smarter than the bloodline that conceived you. Arthur’s accounts were swept clean. Thomas holds the keys."

"Arthur's accounts were empty shells," I said. "They have been empty since 2016."

The duplicate's left eyelid twitched—a micro-expression I recognized instantly, because it was the exact tick I displayed whenever a financial counter-party attempted a bluff during high-stakes contract negotiations.

"Lie," he said quietly.

"Why do you think Margaret put you to sleep in 1991?" I asked, taking one measured step forward.

Specimen 02’s thumb tightened against the detonator’s safety latch. "Don't move!"

"She put you to sleep because you were a genetic dead end," I said, pulling my laptop from beneath my coat and holding it aloft so he could see the crystalline emerald light pulsating on the server blade. "Thomas thought Margaret was building an heir. But Margaret was an accountant, not a geneticist. She knew that any system built on absolute control eventually generates a parasitic feedback loop that destroys itself. She didn't engineer you to be the master, brother. She engineered you to be the ultimate signature of liability."

I tapped a single key on the laptop with my index finger.

Across the lobby, the main building speakers crackled to life.

A voice resonated through the granite hall—not mine, not Thomas's, but the cold, raspy, recorded voice of Margaret Vance, captured three days before her supposed death at Lutheran General Hospital:

*"If you are listening to this, Thomas, you have already broken into the Alpine vault. You have already awakened the boy with Julian's face. And you have already executed the master transfer protocol using his biometrics."*

Upstairs on the thirty-eighth floor, the sudden, muffled crash of furniture being hurled across a room echoed down the maintenance shafts.

*"What you never understood, my dear husband,"* the dead woman’s voice continued, chillingly calm, *"is that the St. Moritz Trust was never registered under Swiss law. It was registered under the Cook County Public Administrator's Escrow Charter of 1974. The moment the clone authenticated his retinal scan, he didn't unlock the sixty billion dollars. He assumed every single un-discharged federal debt, environmental penalty, and criminal liability accumulated by Vance Logistics over the last forty years."*

Specimen 02’s face turned an ashen, translucent white.

"No..." he whispered.

"Look at your wrist terminal," I said coldly.

He looked down. The ruggedized digital screen strapped to his forearm was not showing an incoming wire confirmation. It was showing an automated, irreversible seizure execution from the United States Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.

*ASSETS LIQUIDATED: $0.00.*

*LIABILITIES ASSUMED: $74,812,900,410.22.*

*STATUS: SOVEREIGN INSOLVENCY. IMMEDIATE ASSET ARREST ACTIVE.*

"You're not an architect," I said, closing the distance between us, my eyes locked into his identical pupils. "You're just the world's most expensive bankruptcy filer."

With a roar of pure, synthetic rage, Specimen 02 abandoned the detonator, lunging forward with his bare hands aimed straight at my throat.
