Chapter 109 - The Alpine Extraction

We did not wait for the Lausanne medical transport to arrive.

Once the FINMA transfers cleared the primary clearinghouse in Zurich, the entire Mount Salève compound became a legal war zone. Arthur’s private security contractors, Aegis-Vanguard, realized within minutes that their payroll accounts had been frozen and that their employer was being transferred to a public hospice ward under federal custody.

The alarms that had been chiming rhythmically shifted to a continuous, piercing klaxon.

"Julian," Brandt said, his voice dropping into tactical urgency as he checked his encrypted smartphone. "Aegis-Vanguard command has initiated a local property lockdown. The private security details stationed at the lower gates do not report to the board; they are mercenary contractors hired directly by Arthur’s personal family office. When they realize Arthur has surrendered the master trust, they will attempt to secure the biological assets in Sub-Level 4 before federal marshals arrive."

"Specimen 02," Clara said, her eyes flashing toward the service elevator at the end of the glass corridor. "The pod."

"We cannot leave him," I said.

It wasn't logic. It wasn't financial strategy. It was something far deeper, something that pulled at the marrow of my bones. That boy floating in the liquid nitrogen was my twin, my mirror, a human life grown in a glass jar to serve as spare parts for an old man’s vanity. I had spent twenty-eight years living in a psychological prison built by Eleanor and Thomas; he had spent twenty-eight years in a literal one, suspended between life and death in the dark.

"Julian, the lower levels are losing power," Brandt warned, drawing a suppressed Walther PPK from beneath his charcoal coat. "The cryogenic decompression sequence you saw on the live feed wasn't an error. When Arthur initiated the recovery protocol, the automated system began warming the pod. If the sequence finishes without medical intervention, Specimen 02 will suffer catastrophic cellular shock."

"Then we go down," Clara said, racking the slide of her Glock without an ounce of hesitation. She looked at me, her jaw set with the same fierce, unyielding resolve that had kept us together when my family was trying to tear our lives apart. "We finish this together, Julian."

We bypassed Eleanor, who remained huddled on the floor of the pavilion, babbling incoherently to herself as the flashing red warning lights painted her face in grotesque shades of crimson.

Brandt led us through the heavy blast doors into the central service elevator. He inserted a physical master key into the maintenance slot and turned it hard to the right.

*SUB-LEVEL 4: CRYOGENIC RESEARCH AND REPOSITORY.*

The elevator dropped with a sickening lurch, descending rapidly through the granite core of the mountain. Through the reinforced glass back of the lift car, we could see the structural framework of the facility—levels of automated server banks, chemical synthesis laboratories, and pressurized gas tanks, all flickering under the stuttering emergency backup generators.

*DING.*

The heavy hydraulic doors parted with a blast of icy air that smelled of ozone, liquid nitrogen, and absolute sterility.

Sub-Level 4 was a cathedral of brushed steel and frosted blue acrylic. The temperature here was well below freezing; our breath billowed in thick white clouds before our faces the moment we stepped across the threshold.

At the end of a long, vaulted corridor lined with inactive storage pods, a single cylindrical chamber glowed with brilliant, pulsating sapphire light.

Surrounding the chamber were three Aegis-Vanguard contractors dressed in tactical combat gear, their assault rifles slung across their chests as they furiously worked a manual hydraulic pump attached to the pod's base.

"Step away from the console!" Brandt shouted in French, raising his weapon with two hands.

The contractors didn't negotiate.

The center guard spun around, raising his carbine.

*POP. POP.*

Clara fired twice from behind the cover of a steel support pillar. The heavy 9mm rounds struck the guard’s tactical vest with bone-shattering force, sending him crashing into the side of the pod console. The other two guards dove for cover behind a bank of server racks, opening fire in short, deafening bursts that shattered the acrylic display panels above our heads in a storm of whistling plastic shards.

Brandt returned fire methodically, his suppressed shots clicking with clinical precision. "Julian! The override panel at the base of the chamber! If you don't enter the financial master key, the venting valves will blow!"

I dropped to my knees, sliding across the frost-slicked steel floor toward the base of the glowing sapphire cylinder.

Bullets whined through the freezing air, striking the reinforced casing of the pod with dull, metallic thuds. Clara was leaning out from behind her pillar, laying down disciplined, suppressive fire that kept the remaining guards pinned behind the smoking server banks.

I reached the pedestal. The digital interface was covered in ice crystals.

*EMERGENCY DECOMPRESSION: 00:00:15... 00:00:14...*

*ENTER MASTER CLEARING CODE.*

I wiped the frost from the screen with my bare, bleeding knuckles.

I didn't enter a password from Margaret. I didn't enter a code from Arthur.

I entered the single number that had started this entire war—the exact amount of the Lincoln Park condo that Beatrice had demanded, the seventy-two-thousand-dollar figure that had shattered my wedding cake and broken the chains of my servitude.

*7-2-0-0-0-.-0-0.*

*BEEP.*

*OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. CRYOGENIC STABILIZATION ABORTED. FULL CELLULAR RECOVERY INITIATED.*

A massive hiss of warm steam erupted from the pod's perimeter venting valves, engulfing the entire chamber in a thick, blinding cloud of white fog.
