Chapter 7 - The Crumbling Facade

The room fell into a suffocating quiet. Agnes pushed herself up from her chair. Despite her frail frame and her ninety years, she stood tall, leaning lightly on her silver cane, commanding every inch of the space.

"Janice," Agnes said, looking down at her daughter-in-law. "For thirty-five years, you have looked down your nose at everyone who didn't possess your shallow pedigree. You treated Samuel’s passions as failures because they didn't generate corporate prestige. You treated Eleanor as an intruder from the day Samuel brought her home. But worst of all, you brought your cruelty to a child whose only crime was loving her family."

"Agnes, please," Gerald choked out, finally finding his voice. Tears of genuine panic were welling in his red-rimmed eyes. "Mother... please. We made a mistake. We were under tremendous financial pressure. The bank is threatening foreclosure on our personal credit line. If you revoke the trust stipends, Janice and I will lose everything. We’ll be ruined."

"You ruined yourselves, Gerald," Agnes replied without an ounce of pity. "You stole from me. You stole from your brother’s legacy, you stole from your son, and you tried to rob your granddaughter of her dignity."

Arthur Vance stood up beside Agnes. "Effective as of nine o'clock this morning, the following actions have been executed: First, Gerald Holloway has been formally removed as an officer, trustee, and beneficiary of all Holloway family entities."

Gerald covered his face with his hands, a broken sob escaping his throat.

"Second," Vance continued, "the power of attorney Gerald previously held has been revoked and replaced by Samuel Holloway."

Richard jumped out of his chair. "Samuel? You’re putting Sam in charge? He doesn't know anything about high finance!"

"Samuel possesses something neither you nor your father ever managed to acquire," Agnes snapped, turning on Richard. "Integrity. He has never asked me for a single dollar. When he needed a down payment for his home, he worked extra shifts and saved his salary. When Fiona needed dental surgery, he didn't run to me with his hand out; he took a second job tutoring. Samuel understands the value of an honest life. You, Richard, understand only how to spend money other people bled to earn."

Vance turned another page. "Third, regarding the residential property at forty-four Crestview Terrace currently occupied by Gerald and Janice Holloway. Because the property is held under the Holloway Heritage Trust, a formal thirty-day notice to quit will be issued unless—"

"You're evicting us?!" Janice screamed, her hands clutching her throat. "From our home? The country club... my friends... my entire life is in that neighborhood! You can't put us out on the street!"

"Unless," Vance continued, completely ignoring her outburst, "Gerald and Janice agree to execute a formal confession of judgment acknowledging the two-point-four million dollar debt to the trust, assign all personal vehicles and non-essential luxury assets toward partial restitution, and relocate to a modest trust-owned condominium in the south district."

"The south district?" Janice whispered in absolute horror, as if she had been sentenced to a penal colony. "That’s... that’s where the factory workers live!"

"It’s a clean, safe, two-bedroom home," Agnes said evenly. "Far better than what you deserve. And you will live there on a strictly monitored monthly stipend of three thousand dollars. Not a penny more. If you attempt to challenge this in probate court, Arthur will file formal criminal charges for corporate embezzlement and fraud against both Gerald and Richard."

Richard went limp, collapsing back into his chair as if his spine had been removed. He knew what a criminal indictment would do to his finance license. His career was over the moment those charges touched a courthouse docket.

"Sign the transfer agreements, Gerald," Agnes ordered. "Sign them now, or Arthur walks across the street to the district attorney’s office before the banks close today."
