Chapter 10 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Tom didn't reach for the document immediately. He stared at it, then looked up at me, his gaze sharpening with sudden suspicion.
"What is this?" he asked.
"That is a sworn deposition signed at two o'clock this afternoon by Rebecca Sterling," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the mahogany table. "Witnessed and notarized by the Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District."
At the mention of the U.S. Attorney, Tom’s left eyelid twitched. Just once. But it was enough.
"Rebecca works for Blackwood," Tom said dismissively, though his voice had lost its effortless polish. "She has no authority to—"
"Rebecca doesn't work for Blackwood anymore, Tom," I interrupted. "Rebecca turned state's evidence three hours ago. She handed over the server logs from Vanguard Compliance. The logs showing that you personally authorized the bridge loan parameters from your personal IP address at your Manhattan townhouse four days *before* Michael even submitted the application."
Rachel gasped in the hallway.
Tom sat motionless, his face turning the color of wet chalk.
"You knew about the loan because you designed the loan, Tom," I continued, my voice steady, cutting through the silence like an executioner's blade. "You instructed Blackwood to waive the secondary notary verification on my signature. You intentionally facilitated the forgery of a federally backed residential deed to manufacture leverage against my sister in a divorce proceeding."
"That's completely absurd," Tom hissed, his voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper. "No federal prosecutor would touch a domestic dispute—"
"It stopped being a domestic dispute the second you used Blackwood Capital to move offshore funds through Delaware, Tom," I said. "That’s interstate bank fraud. That’s wire fraud. And under the federal RICO statutes, your entire commercial lending operation is subject to immediate asset freezing."
Tom surged up from his chair, his hands slamming down onto the table with a violent thud. "You think you can intimidate me?! I built this city's corporate tax code! I will bury you, Michael, and Rachel in litigation until you are all rotting in prison cells!"
"You won't bury anyone, Tom," I said calmly, looking toward the hallway.
The front door clicked open.
Heavy footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor of the foyer.
Two men in dark suits stepped into the dining room archway, flanking Rachel. The man on the left reached into his breast pocket and produced a gold federal shield.
"Thomas Reynolds?" the agent asked, his voice booming in the quiet room. "I’m Special Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have a warrant for your arrest for interstate wire fraud, extortion, and bank fraud."
Tom froze. He looked at the agents, then whipped his head toward me, pure, unadulterated venom burning in his eyes.
"You set me up," he snarled, his voice trembling with disbelief. "You brought them to your own house."
"You came here to take my children's home, Tom," I said, rising from my chair to meet his glare. "Did you really think I’d let you leave with it?"
Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back, Mr. Reynolds."
Tom opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The untouchable, immaculate corporate attorney seemed to collapse from the inside out. He slowly turned around, extending his wrists. The cold steel clicked shut around his wrists with a heavy, final snap.
Rachel leaned against the wall, sliding down to the floor, burying her face in her hands as deep, heaving sobs of relief tore through her body.
As the agents led Tom toward the front door, he stopped in the archway, turning his head back toward me.
"You think you won, Natalie?" Tom whispered, a twisted, bloodless grin spreading across his face. "You have no idea what your husband really signed in Chicago. Ask Rebecca about the second key."

Before I could demand an answer, the agents pushed him through the front door into the flashing blue lights waiting in our dark driveway.
