Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Mirror

While the atmosphere inside our home grew increasingly peaceful, the world outside was still digesting the massive fallout of the Sterling scandal. Financial news outlets ran daily exposes on the corrupt municipal contracts Arthur had secured through bribery and extortion. Social media channels buzzed with speculation about Eleanor’s fall from aristocratic grace, as former socialite friends tripped over themselves to distance their names from the disgraced family.

Yet, deep within the grey, sterile confines of the county detention facility, the reality of their new existence was setting in with brutal clarity.

Arthur sat on the edge of a bolted metal bunk bed, staring blankly at the chipped cinderblock wall across from him. The expensive Italian suits had been replaced by a coarse, orange canvas jumpsuit that hung awkwardly on his frame. The manicured perfection of his hair was gone, matted and dull under the harsh fluorescent glare of the cell block.

The heavy steel door rattled open, and a guard motioned him forward. "Sterling. Visitor in booth four. Make it quick."

Arthur dragged his feet across the concrete floor, his spirit utterly broken. He shuffled into the small, partitioned visiting booth, picking up the heavy plastic telephone receiver. On the other side of the reinforced glass sat his mother, Eleanor, looking equally ravaged by the harsh reality of prison life. Her makeup was entirely stripped away, revealing deep, dark hollows under her eyes, and her silk robe had been replaced by the same grim uniform.

"Arthur," Eleanor whispered through the intercom speaker, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and seething, unadulterated hatred. "Did you hear? The court denied our final motion for bond revocation. They've seized the Hamptons summer house, the yacht, and all of our personal trust accounts."

Arthur stared back at her through the glass, his jaw tight, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists on the stainless steel counter. "I know," he ground out, each word tasting like ash in his mouth. "Victoria... she took everything. She didn't just ruin us; she dismantled every brick of our legacy."

"It's that woman," Eleanor hissed, her eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "I told you years ago she wasn't submissive enough. I told you we should have cut her off before she dug her claws into your network. And now... look at us. Sitting in a cage while that ungrateful parasite lives in our home."

Arthur didn't answer. For the first time in his life, the terrifying realization washed over him: it wasn't Victoria who had trapped them. It was their own bottomless arrogance, their cruelty, and their unshakable belief that they were above the law. They had spent their entire lives locking others in cages, never once imagining that the key had been resting quietly in the palm of the person they underestimated the most.

He slowly set the receiver back down on its cradle, cutting off his mother's frantic, bitter rant, and walked back into the dark depths of his cell, leaving the ghosts of his empire far behind.
