Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

By the end of the first week, the story had broken across every major news network in the state. Headlines blared across morning talk shows and financial newspapers: CORRUPTION AT THE TOP: Sterling Enterprises Implodes in Massive Federal Raid; CEO Arrested on Embezzlement and Child Abuse Charges.
The majestic iron gates of the estate—the very gates that had once served as a symbol of our imprisonment—were now wide open, constantly thronged by reporters, camera crews, and federal investigators carrying out boxes of evidence. But inside the walls, a profound, almost surreal peace had finally settled over the halls.
Eleanor’s opulent east-wing suite had been completely sealed off by court order, her expensive silk robes, antique jewelry, and endless rows of designer shoes tagged as potential assets acquired through illicit funds. The oppressive, toxic aura that had suffocated the mansion for five agonizing years was being systematically vacuumed out, replaced by the simple, warm sounds of life: the clinking of cereal bowls in the kitchen, the soft murmur of cartoons playing on the living room television, and Lucas’s quiet laughter as we built a Lego tower on the living room rug—using brand new, unbreakable plastic bricks that he didn't have to fear breaking.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master living room, watching the autumn leaves drift gently across the manicured lawn. My phone buzzed softly on the coffee table. It was a secure notification from Agent Vance.
Arraignment complete, the message read. Both Arthur and Eleanor pled not guilty, but the judge denied all bail motions. They're being transferred to the state penitentiary pending trial. You're completely safe, Victoria. The estate title transfer has been expedited under emergency protective custody provisions.
I let out a long, slow breath—a breath I felt like I had been holding for half a decade. The weight that had crushed my chest for so long was finally gone.
"Mommy, look!" Lucas called out, holding up a completed Lego skyscraper with his left hand, beaming proudly. "It's taller than the old car model!"
I smiled, walking back over to him and sitting down on the floor beside him, completely unconcerned about the designer clothes or the pristine hardwood floors.

"It's the tallest building in the world, buddy," I said, leaning over to give him a gentle hug. "And nobody is ever going to knock it down."
For the first time in my life, I wasn't just surviving. I was the architect of my own destiny, and our future was finally, brilliantly our own.
