Chapter 9 - The Choice at the Altar

The clock on the wall showed 1:45 PM. The ceremony was set to begin in fifteen minutes.

Outside in the grand hall, the string quartet began to play the prelude. Guests were taking their seats, whispering excitedly, anticipating the arrival of the bride.

David stood near the door, watching me with a mixture of fear and profound contrition. "Laura," he said softly, his voice breaking. "Whatever you decide to do—whether you walk out of here right now, whether you never speak to me again—I understand. I broke your trust. But please... let the kids have their moment to make their choice."

I looked from David to Emma, then to Julian, and finally to the other Laura Mitchell.

The weight of twenty-eight years of marriage hung in the balance. The foundation I thought was unbreakable had shattered into a million pieces, but standing amidst the wreckage, I realized something vital: a foundation built on secrets is no foundation at all. But a truth, no matter how brutal, is something we could finally build upon.

"We are going to walk out those doors," I said, my voice cutting through the silence with absolute authority.

Everyone froze.

"Mom..." Emma breathed, her eyes widening in panic.

"We are going to walk out there," I continued, turning to face Julian directly. "And you are going to marry my daughter. But let's get one thing crystal clear: the moment the reception ends tomorrow, you and I are walking down to the local precinct together, and you are turning yourself in to the authorities."

Julian stared at me, stunned. Slowly, a look of profound, overwhelming gratitude washed over his face. He nodded, his voice thick with emotion. "Yes, ma'am. I understand. I promise you."

I then turned my gaze toward the other Laura Mitchell. "And you. You've carried this burden for twenty-five years. If you're willing, I want you to stay for the ceremony. As a guest. Because if it wasn't for your courage today, my family would have continued living a lie."

The other Laura looked genuinely touched, a soft, melancholic smile gracing her lips. "I would be honored, Laura."

Finally, I turned my cold, unyielding gaze onto my husband. "As for us, David... our conversation is far, far from over. When this weekend is finished, you and I are going to sit down and figure out what twenty-eight years of marriage actually means when the lies are stripped away."

David swallowed hard, nodding slowly with tears in his eyes. "I know, honey. And I'll earn back every single piece of your trust, no matter how long it takes."
