Chapter 6 - The Fiancé's Ghost

The lobby fell into such a profound silence that you could hear the distant ticking of a grandfather clock down the hall.

I stared at the woman—my name, my age, yet a complete stranger—and felt the floor drop out from beneath my feet.

"What did you just say?" I breathed, my voice barely escaping my throat.

The woman—Laura—slowly turned her gaze from me to the young man standing by the side entrance. The groom, whom we had all known for three years as Michael Vance, looked like a man standing on the gallows.

"His name isn't Michael Vance," Laura said, her voice steady and laced with decades of suppressed grief. "That's the name he took after he ran. His real name is Julian Cross."

The name hit the marble floor with the weight of a sledgehammer.

I turned back to look at Michael—Julian—and saw him flinch as if he had been physically struck.

"Mom, please," Emma cried out from the floor, crawling toward me and clutching at the hem of my dress. "Please, just listen to him first! Don't judge him by what happened before!"

I stared down at my daughter, my heart shattering into a million jagged pieces. "You knew?" I whispered, horror coating every word. "Emma, you knew about this?"

Emma squeezed her eyes shut, fresh tears spilling over her lashes. "He told me months ago, Mom! Right before we sent out the invitations! He was terrified, but he loved me, and he changed!"

"Changed?" The stranger—Laura—let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "People like Julian don't change, sweetheart. They just find new lives to infiltrate, new names to steal, and new families to lie to."

David stepped between us, his face pale and strained. "Laura—my Laura," he said, looking at me with pleading eyes. "That's why I went to the bakery. That's why I tried to stop the wedding yesterday. We were trying to give him one last chance to come clean himself. We wanted to protect Emma from a public scandal, and we wanted to protect you from the shock."

"Protect me?" I shouted, my voice finally breaking past the shock into unbridled rage. "You lied to me for weeks! You sneaked around behind my back with another woman who happens to share my name, you sabotaged our daughter's wedding cake, and you expected me to just sit back and play the happy mother of the bride while living inside a web of lies?!"

"We didn't know what else to do!" David yelled back, his own voice cracking with desperation. "If the police got involved, if the truth came out publicly today, Emma's life would have been destroyed right along with his!"

"My life is already destroyed!" Emma wailed, burying her face in her hands as her dream wedding dissolved into a nightmare around her.

I stood paralyzed, the pieces of my reality spinning out of control. Twenty-eight years of marriage, built on a foundation I suddenly couldn't trust; a daughter I thought I knew better than anyone; and a groom with a stolen identity and a dark, hidden past.

"Julian," I whispered, turning my eyes slowly toward the young man.

He finally looked up, his eyes red-rimmed, filled with a mixture of immense shame and raw, desperate plea.

"Mrs. Mitchell," he choked out, his voice shaking violently. "I know how this looks. I know I deserve whatever hatred you have for me. But please... whatever else is true... everything I feel for Emma is real."
