Chapter 17 - The Huntress's Gambit

Marcus emerged from the drainage well three minutes later, carrying a heavy, mud-caked titanium cylinder. He wiped the housing and dialed the six digits: 0-9-1-4-8-6.

A heavy pneumatic hiss escaped the seal. The cap unscrewed cleanly.

Inside was a leather-bound book containing handwritten financial ledgers, notarized offshore wire receipts, and a signed covenant bearing the personal seal of Harold Abernathy, Lucian Vane, and the executive board of Cadence Apex Group. It was an explicit, unassailable contract outlining the systematic liquidation of Dr. Arthur Mitchell, the transfer of his assets to Richard Vance, and the eventual privatization of their intellectual property through an orchestrated hostile takeover.

It was not merely an insurance policy. It was a signed death warrant for seven of the most powerful corporate oligarchs in the Western hemisphere.

"Daniel," I spoke into the comms. "Are you recording this through the body-cam feed?"

"Every single page," Daniel’s voice came back, trembling with awe. "Katherine... this doesn't just stop their injunction tomorrow. This triggers an immediate, non-discretionary federal indictment under the RICO Act. The Attorney General won't have a choice. The evidence is irrefutable."

"Don't send it to the Attorney General," I said.

Daniel paused. "What? Why?"

"Because the Attorney General's campaign was funded by Cadence’s primary political action committee," I replied, watching Lucian Vane’s expression contort into sudden dread. "If you hand this to the Department of Justice, it will be sealed under national security classifications within twenty minutes and lost in a federal vault forever."

"Then who do we give it to?" Daniel asked.

"The world," I said. "We upload every page, every wire transfer, every transaction hash to an immutable, decentralized distributed ledger across sixty-four thousand nodes across thirty countries. We mirror it to every major investigative journalism consortium, every medical journal, and every open-access server simultaneously at 08:00 AM."

Lucian Vane pushed himself up against the wall, clutching his bloody knee, his face twisted in venomous rage. "You stupid, arrogant bitch! You think you can burn down the temple of global commerce? Do you know what happens to the markets if seven multi-billion-dollar conglomerates collapse overnight? The economic fallout will destroy pension funds, wipe out healthcare infrastructure, plunge entire sectors into freefall!"

"Then let it fall," I said, stepping closer to him. "If a temple is built upon the blood of my father and the agony of thousands of patients who were denied treatment so you could protect your profit margins, it deserves to be reduced to ash. And from the ash, something honest will grow."

I turned back to Richard, who was still huddled on the floor, watching me with wide, uncomprehending eyes.

"What... what about me?" Richard whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood. "Katherine... you’re not going to leave me here with them, are you? If Cadence finds me, they’ll skin me alive. Please... take me with you. Put me back in Wallkill. Put me in solitary! I’ll stay in a six-by-eight cell for the rest of my life, I swear, just don't leave me here!"

I looked down at the man I had once pledged my life to in front of two hundred people. The man who had stripped me of my home, my dignity, and my peace. The man who had sat in that courtroom with Victoria on his arm, smirking while the bailiff called my name, expecting me to grovel.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the gold Nobel medallion, and tossed it into the dust at his feet.

"You spent your whole life trying to steal my gold, Richard," I said softly. "Keep it. It’s the only piece of my world you will ever touch again."

I turned toward the exit. "Marcus. Secure Vane. Leave Richard."

"Katherine! No! Katherine, please!" Richard’s screams tore through the cavernous warehouse, echoing off the iron rafters as Marcus’s men dragged Vane toward the extraction boat. "Katherine! You can't do this! I am your husband! I am your husband!"

May you like

The heavy steel doors of the terminal slammed shut, cutting off his cries into the cold, forgiving dark.
