Chapter 14 - The Subpoena in Crimson

I moved on pure instinct, diving behind the thick marble pedestal of my father’s sarcophagus just as the detonator struck the flagstone floor.

The explosion never came.

The detonator was a dummy—a decoy wired to an inert battery pack. The shot that killed Victoria had come from a suppressed rifle situated in the tree line three hundred yards out.

"Sniper at eleven o'clock!" Marcus’s voice bellowed through the earpiece. The roar of automatic gunfire erupted outside as my security detail returned suppressive fire into the dark woods.

I remained low, crawling across the damp stone to Victoria's body. Her pulse was gone, but her left hand was tightly clenched. I pried her cold fingers open. Inside was a micro-SD card coated in fresh blood.

"Target down in the woods," Marcus reported through the comms, breathing heavily. "Doctor, we have to move. Local law enforcement is going to swarm this grid in four minutes."

I slipped the card into my coat pocket, stepped over the spreading pool of crimson, and walked out into the rain.

Within an hour, we were holed up in a secure penthouse suite sixty stories above Midtown Manhattan—a property held under an anonymous shell company that even Daniel did not know existed until midnight. The room was bathed in the blue glow of four decryption terminals.

Daniel sat at the workstation, running the micro-SD card through an air-gapped forensic suite. His hands were pale, his tie loosened.

"It’s not just Richard’s location," Daniel said, his eyes scanning cascading walls of raw data. "It’s a corporate registry. Katherine, Cadence Apex Group isn't a shadow syndicate. It’s an alliance of seven pharmaceutical conglomerates, four members of the Senate Finance Committee, and..." He trailed off, looking up at me in horror.

"And who, Daniel?"

"The International Court of Arbitration in The Hague." Daniel pushed a document to the center screen. "Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, a sealed injunction is being served to the United Nations Intellectual Property Organization. They are filing an emergency petition to seize all rights to your neural-regeneration treatment under an emergency sovereign defense clause."

"Under whose authorization?"

"Judge Harold Abernathy," Daniel whispered. "He didn't commit suicide after your trial, Katherine. He faked his death. He’s sitting on the private board of directors of Cadence in Zurich right now. And they’re claiming that your father’s research was originally developed using covert Department of Defense black-budget funds—meaning you don't own it. The government does. And Cadence holds the exclusive defense distribution contract."

I looked out at the jagged skyline of New York, where millions of people slept peacefully, completely unaware that their health, their minds, and their futures were commodities bought and sold in backroom auctions by men in bespoke suits.

"They want to take the cure," I said softly, "and turn it into a biological subscription service. A hundred thousand dollars a dose, or your nervous system degenerates."

"They have the legal infrastructure to execute it by noon tomorrow," Daniel said grimly. "Unless Richard testifies."

"Richard?" I scoffed. "Richard would sell his own mother for a shot of morphine."

"Richard is the only one who has the original paper ledger signed by Abernathy proving the contract was fabricated," Daniel said, pointing to a highlighted memo on the screen. "Richard kept an insurance policy. He knew Cadence would kill him once his usefulness expired. He hid the ledger in the one place Cadence could never reach."

"Where?"

"In the vault beneath the Manhattan Harbor terminal," Daniel answered. "Where they're currently interrogating him. They don't know the ledger is in the building. They think he buried it in the Caymans."

I checked the magazine of the ceramic pistol, slamming it back into the grip with a sharp, mechanical click.

"Order the tactical team," I instructed Marcus, who was standing silently by the reinforced entryway. "We’re going to rescue my ex-husband."
