Chapter 5 - Unraveling an Empire

Eleanor shrieked, clawing at the air as her son crumpled to the floor. "You assaulted my son! You barbarian! Guards! Arrest this rural animal right now!"

Not a single federal marshal moved to help her. Instead, the lead tactical officer stepped forward, snapped to attention, and offered a crisp, flawless salute to my father.

"General Vance," the officer reported formally. "Perimeter secured. Assets frozen. Medical evacuation chopper touching down on the front lawn in sixty seconds."

"Thank you, Captain," my father said, his voice smooth, deep, and carrying the chilling resonance of absolute power. He didn't look down at Carter, who was whimpering and clutching his bleeding jaw. Dad knelt down beside me, his large, calloused hands gently—infinitely gently—resting on my forehead.

"You're safe now, sweetheart," Dad whispered, his voice softening with a warmth he reserved exclusively for me. "I've got you. Daddy’s here."

"Dad... the baby..." I sobbed, gripping his sleeve with my trembling fingers.

"The best neonatal team in the country is waiting at Walter Reed on my direct orders," Dad said, smoothing my hair back from my face. He looked up at the medics. "Move her. Gently. If she loses consciousness, you answer to me."

As the medics lifted my stretcher and rushed toward the front door—where the deafening roar of a military-grade helicopter rotor was already shaking the windows—Dad stood up and turned back to face Eleanor and Carter.

Carter was struggling to push himself up, spitting blood onto the floor. "You... you can't do this. My uncle... Uncle Richard will destroy you. We'll sue you for every penny—"

Dad let out a short, cold chuckle.

"Richard?" Dad asked, raising an eyebrow. "You mean Richard Sterling? Former senior prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia?"

Carter froze. "How... how do you know his full name?"

Dad reached into his pocket, pulled out a small leather folio, and tossed it onto the kitchen table. It flipped open, revealing a gold-embossed federal badge and a presidential seal signed by the Attorney General himself.

"Richard Sterling was stripped of his bar license, relieved of his duties, and placed under federal arrest thirty minutes ago," Dad said calmly. "Along with three of his associate judges who took kickbacks from your little real estate syndicate. Your firm didn't just launder money, Carter. You stepped onto federal property, threatened a protected asset under my direct command, and thought you could hide behind local corruption."

Eleanor’s legs finally gave out, and she slid down the kitchen wall, weeping hysterically into her hands. "This... this isn't real. This is a nightmare. Who are you people?"

"I am Arthur Vance," my father said, turning his back on them as he walked toward the door. "And you just spent two years abusing the only thing in this world that mattered to me."
