Chapter 2 - The Shockwave Begins

Within four minutes of the call ending, the digital clock on the microwave blinked at 8:26 p.m.

Carter was halfway through dialing his uncle when his cell phone—his personal phone, not my cracked one—let out a piercing, high-pitched emergency alert tone. It wasn't a standard text notification. It was the override tone reserved for corporate bankruptcies, federal audits, and immediate judicial freezes.

"What the hell?" Carter muttered, pulling the phone away from his ear.

"Probably a spam alert," Eleanor muttered, sipping her wine. "This neighborhood gets absolute trash on the networks nowadays."

Carter swiped the screen, his eyes scanning the notification. Instantly, the color drained entirely from his face, leaving him the shade of skim milk. His jaw went slack, and the phone slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the kitchen tiles alongside my shattered screen.

"Carter? What is it?" Eleanor asked, her voice sharpening with sudden anxiety. "Did your uncle say something?"

"It... it's not Uncle Richard," Carter whispered, his voice trembling violently. He dropped to his knees, scrambling to pick up his phone as if doing so could reverse reality. "My firm’s corporate accounts... they’ve been frozen."

"Frozen?" Eleanor stood up so fast her throw blanket tangled around her ankles, causing her to stumble against the counter. "Don't be ridiculous. Your partnership buy-in alone is worth a million dollars. Who freezes a Vance firm account?"

"The Department of Justice," Carter choked out, his fingers fumbling wildly over his screen as he tried to open his banking app. Every single portal flashed a grim, unyielding red banner: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED UNDER NATIONAL SECURITY DIRECTIVE 14-B. ASSETS SEIZED PENDING FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

Before Carter could even begin to process the words, his phone began ringing again. The caller ID flashed FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF RICHMOND - SPECIAL COMPLIANCE.

With trembling fingers, Carter hit accept and put it on speaker.

"This is partner Carter Vance," he stammered, trying desperately to sound authoritative, though his voice cracked miserably. "There has clearly been a catastrophic administrative error—"

"Mr. Vance," a cold, computerized yet distinctly human voice cut him off with razor-like precision. "This is Director Hayes, Asset Forfeiture Division. We are acting on direct authorization from the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Federal Judiciary. All commercial properties, residential holdings, vehicle registrations, and investment portfolios associated with Vance & Associates Law Firm, as well as all personal accounts tied to Eleanor Vance and Carter Vance, are locked effective immediately."

Eleanor shrieked, rushing over and grabbing the phone. "Listen to me, you incompetent bureaucrat! My son is an officer of the court! We know Senator Higgins! We dine with federal judges! You cannot do this!"

"Ma'am," Director Hayes replied coldly, completely unfazed. "Your primary residence at 442 Elmwood Terrace, Alexandria, has just been placed under eminent domain seizure for federal audit. Federal marshals are currently fifty miles out and will arrive at your premises in approximately twenty minutes. I suggest you pack a single overnight bag. Good evening."

The line clicked dead.

In the heavy, suffocating silence of the kitchen, Carter stared up at me where I lay bleeding on the floor. The arrogance, the smug cruelty, the absolute invincibility that had defined him just five minutes ago had completely evaporated.

In its place was the hollow, whimpering terror of a man standing at the edge of an abyss.
