Chapter 8 - The Shattered Alliance

Brandon remained on his knees on the cold marble floor, staring up at the two documents resting like executioner’s axes on the obsidian table. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by his ragged, gasping breaths and the soft hum of the ventilation system.

"Read them," Claire instructed coldly.

Mark, shaking with a mixture of incandescent rage and sheer terror, stepped forward from his chair. He reached down and snatched the top document from the table, scanning the legal text with frantic eyes.

"What is this?" Mark whispered, his voice trembling before erupting into a roar. He slammed the paper back down onto the table. "It’s a formal notice of termination! Sterling Capital is withdrawing the $7 million Series A investment immediately!"

Dave leaped out of his seat, grabbing the second document. "And look at this! It cites severe breaches of ethical conduct, executive liability clauses, and irreversible partnership dissolution! Brandon... what have you done?!"

Mark turned on Brandon with pure, unadulterated fury. The veins in his neck stood out like thick ropes.

"You absolute, moronic, narcissistic idiot!" Mark screamed, lunging forward and grabbing Brandon by the lapels of his expensive suit, hoisting him up off his knees. "We spent three years building BrightCore from nothing! We sacrificed our sleep, our savings, our youth! And you—because you couldn't control your sadistic, abusive ego—you assaulted the CEO of our only financial lifeline?!"

"Mark, wait, let me explain—" Brandon choked out, flailing weakly as Mark shoved him backward against the edge of the conference table.

"Explain what?!" Mark roared, spittle flying from his lips. "We’re dead! BrightCore has forty-eight hours before payroll bounces, our creditors seize the servers, and we are forced into Chapter 7 liquidation! We are bankrupt, Brandon! Bankrupt! And it's all because you treated your wife like a slave and beat her!"

Mark let out a harsh, broken laugh, backing away from Brandon as if looking at a radioactive carcass. "I’m done. Do you hear me? I’m resigning effective immediately. I’m calling our corporate counsel downstairs right now to strip my name from the articles of incorporation so I don't go down in flames with your sinking ship."

"Mark, please, you can't walk away!" Brandon pleaded, lunging after his co-founder. "We can fix this! We can beg Ms. Sterling—"

"There is nothing to fix," Mark hissed, his eyes blazing with venom. "You destroyed us, Brandon. Go home to your mother. You deserve each other."

Mark snatched his leather portfolio from his chair, cast one final look of utter disgust at Claire, and stormed out of the boardroom, slamming the heavy double doors behind him with a concussion-like boom that rattled the glass walls. Dave followed close behind him without uttering a single word, abandoning Brandon to his absolute isolation.

The boardroom fell deathly quiet once more.

Brandon stood alone in the center of the vast, sunlit room, abandoned by his partners, despised by his investors, and utterly ruined by his own arrogant cruelty. He turned slowly back toward the head of the table, his face stained with tears and snot, looking like a shattered shell of a man.

Claire picked up a sleek Montblanc fountain pen from her desk and slid it across the table toward his trembling hand.

"There is still the second document, Brandon," Claire reminded him quietly.

Brandon looked down. Beneath the termination notice lay the divorce petition—drawn up by New York’s most ruthless family law division, demanding an absolute, irrevocable break with zero alimony, full surrender of any marital claims, and total protection of Claire’s premarital empire.

"Sign it," Claire said.
