Chapter 8 - The Cuffs Come On

The word warrants hung in the crisp morning air like a guillotine blade poised over a condemned man.

Vanessa let out a strangled, high-pitched gasp, clutching her chest as her knees buckled. She grabbed onto the marble doorframe to keep from collapsing onto the floor. "Arrest warrants? No... no, you can't do that! We're pillars of this community! We have social standing!"

"Your social standing was built on borrowed money and stolen credibility, Vanessa," Eleanor said, her voice remaining terrifyingly level. "And now, that house of cards has collapsed."

As if on cue, the low, throbbing rumble of heavy diesel engines rolled up the private driveway. Two unmarked dark blue federal SUV units pulled up behind the Rolls-Royce, their tires crunching sharply against the gravel. Four federal law enforcement officers stepped out, their tactical vests clearly bearing federal insignia, and strode purposefully up the steps toward the grand foyer.

Ethan looked wildly from the approaching federal agents to Eleanor, his bravado entirely shattered, replaced by the pathetic, sniveling terror of a cornered coward.

"Eleanor, please!" Ethan cried out, dropping shamelessly to his knees right there on the limestone porch, grabbing the hem of her ivory coat. "Don't do this! Please! I'm your husband! Think of our history together! We can leave the country—we can start over anywhere you want!"

Eleanor looked down at him, her expression a masterclass in absolute indifference. She slowly pulled the fabric of her coat out of his trembling fingers, stepping back a half-pace so she wouldn't have to look at him at ground level.

"History?" Eleanor whispered, a dark, bitter smile touching her lips. "My father taught me one valuable lesson before he died, Ethan: Never trust a man who loves your reflection in his pocket more than your face in the mirror. You failed that test on day one."

She turned her head slightly toward the lead federal agent. "He's all yours, officer."

Before Ethan could scream or scramble backward, two pairs of heavy, calloused hands grabbed him by the shoulders, hauling him upright with brutal efficiency. The sharp, metallic click of steel handcuffs echoed loudly against the grand wooden doors of the mansion.

"Ethan Vance, you are under federal arrest for wire fraud, corporate forgery, and malicious assault," the lead agent announced, reading the charges off a digital tablet as he forced Ethan's arms behind his back.

"Mother! Do something! Call someone!" Ethan shrieked, kicking and flailing as they dragged him toward the waiting SUV.

Vanessa stood frozen against the doorframe, tears of pure rage and humiliation streaming down her powdered cheeks, utterly powerless as her precious son was shoved into the back of a federal transport vehicle like a common criminal.
