Chapter 6 - The Eviction Notice

The heavy oak front door slammed shut behind Arthur, leaving Ethan and Vanessa trapped in the suffocating silence of their collapsing empire.

For nearly ten minutes, neither of them spoke. Vanessa sank into one of the velvet barstools, her manicured fingers trembling as she clutched her temples. The grand illusion she had spent decades curating—the flawless pedigree, the aristocratic wealth, the undisputed dominance over high society—had evaporated into thin air in less than twelve hours.

"We need to call our lawyers," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking with sudden, raw panic. "We have connections. Judges, politicians, old family friends..."

"What lawyers, Mother?" Ethan shouted, his frustration finally boiling over into blind rage. He grabbed a ceramic fruit bowl off the counter and hurled it across the kitchen, shattering it against the pantry door. "Every single corporate account is frozen! We don't have liquid cash to pay a traffic cop, let alone a high-priced legal defense team!"

Before Vanessa could retort, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed through the grand foyer.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Ethan froze. Vanessa looked up, hope briefly flickering in her terrified eyes. "See? Someone is here. Maybe Arthur was wrong. Maybe it's just a courier with the deed papers."

Ethan dragged his feet across the marble floor, walking through the grand archway and pulling open the heavy front doors.

It wasn't a courier.

Standing on the limestone porch were two towering private security guards dressed in black tactical uniforms bearing the gold emblem of Mercer Holdings, flanked by a sharp, middle-aged woman in a tailored charcoal pantsuit carrying a titanium briefcase.

"Ethan Vance?" the woman asked, her voice entirely devoid of emotion.

"Who the hell are you?" Ethan demanded, puffing out his chest in a desperate, pathetic display of lingering authority. "This is private property! You are trespassing on Mercer—"

"Correction, Mr. Vance," the woman interrupted smoothly, pulling a crisp, blue-backed legal document from her briefcase and holding it out. "This property no longer belongs to you, nor does it belong to Vanessa Vance. Pursuant to Section 4 of the Mercer Revocable Master Trust, all residential privileges granted to Ethan Vance are hereby revoked effective immediately."

She stepped past him without waiting for an invitation, entering the grand foyer with the unbothered confidence of a queen inspecting her conquered lands. Vanessa rushed out from the kitchen, her face flushed with venomous rage.

"How dare you walk into my home!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at the woman. "Do you know who I am? I demand to speak to the owner of this estate right now!"

May you like

The woman stopped, turning slowly to look at Vanessa with a gaze so glacial it made both mother and son instinctively step back.

"You are currently standing in Eleanor Mercer's living room," the woman said clearly. "And she would like a word with you both."
