Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Empire

Within forty-eight hours, the elite circles of Chicago were buzzing with a scandal that eclipsed every corporate merger or financial collapse in the city's history.
The Moretti marriage had imploded.
Whispers spread like wildfire through country clubs, high-end restaurants, and boardroom tables. People whispered about Ethan Walker’s wedding, about Sophia Reynolds flaunting an irreplaceable family heirloom on her wrist, and about Claire Moretti packing her bags and walking away from one of the wealthiest dynasties in the Midwest without asking for a single dime of alimony.
For Adrian Moretti, the personal devastation was immediately mirrored in his professional life.
A conglomerate like Moretti Enterprises relies heavily on stability, public trust, and a pristine reputation. With Richard and Catherine publicly withdrawing their emotional and strategic backing from Adrian—moving their primary residence back to New York and refusing to take his calls—investors grew nervous.
Worse still, Adrian’s focus had completely evaporated.
In the weeks following my departure, Adrian tried to numb his reality by diving headfirst into work, but his legendary business acumen had deserted him. He snapped at senior executives, rejected lucrative shipping contracts out of sheer distraction, and lost a major downtown casino licensing bid because he failed to review the final compliance documents.
Sophia, meanwhile, sensing that her golden goose was losing his feathers, doubled down on her demands.
Believing that Claire's exit meant the coast was clear for her to step into the role of the undisputed queen of Moretti Enterprises, Sophia began showing up unannounced at Adrian’s corporate headquarters on Michigan Avenue. She demanded shopping sprees, expensive cars, and public validation of their relationship.
"Adrian, darling, when are you going to announce our engagement?" Sophia whined one afternoon, lounging across the leather sofa in Adrian’s sprawling top-floor office. She was twirling the emerald-and-diamond bracelet around her wrist—the very bracelet Adrian had not yet had the courage or the heart to demand back from her. "People are talking. They're saying you're still legally married to that nobody."
Adrian sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring blankly at a stack of unread quarterly reports. He looked exhausted. Deep purple shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and stubble darkened his jaw.
For two years, whenever Sophia had made such demands, Adrian would soothe her with smooth promises and lavish gifts. But today, listening to her shrill, self-centered voice ring through the quiet office, something inside him snapped.
He didn't see a romantic victim of circumstance anymore. He saw a shallow, manipulative parasite who had systematically poisoned his marriage.
"Put that bracelet away, Sophia," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low.
Sophia paused, dropping her hand. She blinked in surprise, offering her signature fragile pout. "What? What's wrong with you, Adrian? You gave it to me."
"I gave it to you in a moment of utter stupidity," Adrian said, standing up slowly from his executive chair. He towered over the desk, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying intensity that made Sophia shrink back against the sofa cushions. "That bracelet belongs to Claire. It belongs to my family. Take it off right now."
Sophia's face flushed with genuine shock and indignation. "Are you serious? You're yelling at me over a piece of old jewelry? After everything I've given up for you? Claire is gone, Adrian! She left you! Why are you still defending her?"
"Because," Adrian roared, slamming his palm down onto the mahogany desk with a force that rattled the crystal decanter, "Claire was the only real thing in my life, and I let you trick me into destroying it!"
The office fell dead silent. Sophia stared at him, her mouth agape, realizing for the first time that her hold over Adrian Moretti was completely, irreversibly gone.
"Get out," Adrian whispered, pointing a rigid finger toward the double doors of the office. "Get out of my building, get out of my life, and if you ever contact me again, I will ensure you never set foot in the state of Illinois."

Trembling with humiliation and fury, Sophia scrambled off the sofa, snatched her designer handbag, and fled the office without another word.
Adrian collapsed back into his leather chair, rubbing his face with his hands. He was rich, powerful, and utterly, desolately alone.
