Chapter 4 - The Wrath of the Morettis

The doorbell chimed through the expansive hallways of the estate, but nobody moved. Downstairs, the household staff had wisely made themselves scarce, sensing the apocalyptic tempest brewing in the foyer.

Adrian stood frozen by the side of the bed, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. The invincible Adrian Moretti looked like a trapped animal facing a hunter.

"They're here," Adrian muttered, his voice barely audible.

"Yes, they are," I replied calmly, tossing back the duvet and swinging my legs over the side of the bed. I slipped my bare feet into my slippers, stood up, and smoothed down the fabric of my pajamas. I didn't rush, nor did I cower. I walked past him toward the bedroom door without so much as a sideways glance.

"Claire, wait," Adrian reached out, his fingers brushing the sleeve of my pajamas. "Let me talk to them first. Let me explain—"

"Explain what, Adrian?" I stopped, turning my head slightly to look at him over my shoulder. "That you handed your dying grandmother's sacred legacy to your mistress while your wife sat at home? Please, do tell them. I'm sure they'll find your explanation riveting."

I walked out of the bedroom, leaving him standing alone in the wake of his own ruin.

Downstairs, the front door had already been unlocked by automated security override. Richard and Catherine Moretti marched into the grand foyer, their presence commanding immediate, terrified respect.

Catherine Moretti, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal St. John suit with pearls resting gracefully against her collarbone, looked ready to commit murder. Her face was set in hard lines of aristocratic fury. Behind her strode Richard, towering and broad-shouldered, his silver-streaked hair brushed back sharply, his dark eyes radiating the same ruthless authority that Adrian had inherited.

As I descended the grand curved staircase, Catherine looked up. Her harsh expression instantly softened into deep, maternal concern as she caught sight of me.

"Claire, darling," Catherine called out, rushing forward to meet me at the foot of the stairs. She took both of my hands in hers, her fingers trembling slightly. "Are you alright? We flew in the second we heard. That ungrateful, arrogant fool of a son of mine—where is he?"

"He's upstairs, Mother Moretti," I said gently, returning the squeeze of her hands.

Just then, Adrian descended the stairs behind me, his posture stiff, walking down into the lion's den.

Richard Moretti didn't wait for his son to reach the bottom step. He strode across the marble foyer, his hand pulling back, and delivered a resounding, lightning-fast open-handed slap across Adrian’s face.

Crack.

The sound echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer. Adrian’s head snapped to the side, a bright red mark blooming instantly across his cheek. He didn't touch his face, nor did he flinch. He simply straightened his posture, jaw clenched, taking his punishment from the patriarch without a word.

"You miserable, arrogant bastard," Richard roared, his voice shaking with accumulated rage. "We built this family's name on honor, loyalty, and iron-clad respect! Your grandmother handed that bracelet to Claire with her dying breath, binding our family's honor to her wrist! And you—you stripped it off her and handed it to a cheap floozy for a photo op?"

"Dad, it was a mistake—" Adrian started, his voice strained.

"Shut your mouth!" Catherine screamed, whirling around to face her son, tears of fury gleaming in her eyes. "Don't you dare utter another word of excuses! For months, your father and I have covered for your reckless obsession with that woman, hoping you'd grow up, hoping you'd realize what a magnificent, loyal wife you had in Claire! But you crossed a line from which there is no return."

Catherine turned back to me, her eyes brimming with genuine sorrow. "Claire, my sweet girl. You deserve the world. You do not deserve this humiliation. If you want to strip him of every asset, every share, and throw him out on the street, your father-in-law and I will legally back you with all our power."

I looked at the two elderly people who had loved me like a daughter from the day I married into their family. I offered them a serene, grateful smile.

"Thank you, Catherine. Thank you, Richard," I said softly, stepping down to the ground floor. "But I don't want his money or his ruined empire. I just want out."

Adrian’s head snapped toward me, his eyes widening in sheer terror. "Out? Claire, what are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about filing for divorce, Adrian," I said, my voice cutting through the foyer like crystal glass. "Our marriage is officially over."
