Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The bitter morning air offered no comfort as the heavy silence of the house pressed down on Elena. Six months pregnant, her body ached with a fatigue that sleep could no longer cure. Yet, peace was a foreign luxury in a home governed by fear. Her husband, Trent, moved through their lives like a petty tyrant, flanked by parents who viewed cruelty as a virtue and a sister who weaponized technology for public humiliation.

On this particular morning, the brewing hostility boiled over into overt violence. A wave of physical exhaustion sent Elena crashing to the kitchen floor, defenseless against the hostility surrounding her. When Trent raised a heavy wooden walking stick to inflict punishment for her perceived disobedience, the psychological cage shattered. Protecting her unborn child with her own body, Elena knew endurance was no longer an option.

With her phone just out of reach, she dragged herself across the cold tiles, ignoring the agony in her limbs. She frantically pressed the side button to trigger her emergency SOS, silently broadcasting her location and a live audio feed to the one person who could alter her fate: her brother Alex, a former Marine stationed less than ten minutes away. Just as Trent stomped down to snatch the device away, a sudden, unnatural stillness swept through the house. The aggressive hum of appliances died, the lights flickered out, and complete, impenetrable darkness swallowed the rooms.
