Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

The transition from victim to victor was neither instantaneous nor painless, despite the sweeping legal victories. Back at the sprawling estate—now officially renamed and legally secured under my sole proprietorship—the nights were still punctuated by phantom memories. Sometimes, as I walked down the dim corridor of the second floor, I could still smell the acrid, sickening odor of burning flesh, and my right hand would involuntarily spasm around an imaginary handle.
To heal, I knew I had to confront the ghosts head-on.
One afternoon, sitting in the sunlit home office that had once been Dominic’s private sanctuary—now converted into my operational command center—I opened a locked wooden chest that had belonged to my grandmother. Inside, beneath faded photographs and old family recipes, lay a collection of letters and legal documents detailing her own struggles as a pioneering female entrepreneur in a heavily male-dominated industry back in the 1970s.
A yellowed newspaper clipping caught my eye. The headline read: Local Woman Fights Corporate Fraud to Save Family Business.
My grandmother had faced betrayal, financial ruin, and arrogant men who tried to minimize her contributions at every turn. And yet, she had prevailed, building the very foundation of financial security that had ultimately allowed me to survive Dominic’s abuse.
"You’re stronger than you know, my girl," her handwriting seemed to whisper from the margin of an old diary entry.
The ringing of my cell phone interrupted the quiet solitude. I glanced at the screen. It was Detective Chloe Park.
"I thought you’d want to know," Chloe’s voice came through crisp and professional. "Gerald Vance just officially withdrew as Dominic’s primary counsel. He realized that defending an unwinnable corporate fraud case while the client is simultaneously throwing tantrums in county lockup is bad for his firm’s reputation."
"Did Dominic find new representation?" I asked, sipping my herbal tea.
"A public defender who is advising him to take a plea deal," Chloe chuckled softly on the other end of the line. "Twenty years federal, with all asset forfeiture upheld. Victoria and Arthur are trying to file emergency petitions claiming medical hardship, but the judge tossed them out of court this morning. They’re facing eviction notices from their temporary residence next week."
"Karma has a very precise timeline," I murmured.
"Indeed it does," Chloe agreed. "By the way, how is the hand? The physical therapy reports looked promising."

I looked down at my right hand. The skin was scarred, a silver-pink map of my survival, but the mobility was returning day by day. Every time I flexed my fingers, I remembered the click of the hidden camera beneath the kitchen island. That click had not just saved my life; it had rewritten my entire destiny.
"It’s healing, Chloe," I said, a genuine smile touching my lips. "For the first time in my life... it’s truly healing."
