Chapter 8 - Sirens in the Dark

The wail of police sirens cut through the cold night air, growing louder by the second as a convoy of cruisers converged on the industrial park, their flashing red and blue lights painting the brick walls in strobing washes of color.

David remained on the floor, his hands raised slowly in the air, his face pale and distorted with rage and fear as he realized there was no escape left. The active chat session on the laptop—which I had managed to broadcast directly to the federal cybercrime taskforce portal before he reached the platform—had already locked his offshore accounts and dispatched local tactical units to secure the perimeter.

"Stay right where you are!" a chorus of shouted commands echoed from the ground floor as heavy boots pounded up the metal staircase.

Within seconds, uniformed officers and federal agents swarmed the platform, weapons drawn, securing the area and pinning David face-down to the concrete with plastic zip-ties locked tightly around his wrists.

I lowered the pistol, letting it slip from my fingers onto the workbench, and immediately dropped to my knees, gathering Leo into my arms.

"You're safe now, baby. It's over. It's finally over," I whispered, burying my face in his hair as the tears—long suppressed by survival and adrenaline—finally broke free, hot and cleansing against his cheek.

"Mommy, we made it," Leo sobbed softly, clinging to my neck with all his remaining strength.

A paramedic pushed through the cluster of officers, kneeling beside us with a portable medical kit, offering warm blankets and checking our vital signs. The poison, it turned out, had been administered in a sublethal dose calculated to induce deep unconsciousness rather than immediate fatality—part of David’s meticulous plan to stage our deaths as a tragic, peaceful household accident while he cleaned up the evidence.

As they led David away in handcuffs—his head bowed, his immaculate suit stained with dust and blood—he didn't look back. He was just another ghost caught in the machinery of his own design, disappearing into the dark patrol car as the flashing lights painted the night sky.
