Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

One year to the day after that terrifying night, I stood on the front porch of our new home, watching the golden sun rise over the ocean horizon.

The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the faint, salty scent of the sea, completely devoid of copper, poison, or fear.

Leo ran out the front door, his backpack slung over one shoulder, laughing as he chased our new golden retriever puppy across the green lawn. He stopped at the edge of the driveway, turned back, and flashed me a bright, gap-toothed smile that mirrored all the joy and resilience in the world.

"Hurry up, Mom! We're going to miss the bus!" he called out, his voice ringing clear and strong in the morning light.

"Coming, buddy!" I called back, stepping off the porch and locking the front door behind me with a firm, confident click.

As I walked down the path to join my son, I looked up at the boundless blue sky. The nightmare was over. The shadows had receded, leaving behind a world reclaimed, a future protected, and a life where we were finally, truly safe.

And as I took Leo’s small hand in mine, walking together into the bright, unwritten dawn, I knew that no matter what storms lay ahead, we had already weathered the worst of the night—and we had won.
