Chapter 9 - The Day of Judgment

The main courtroom of the Hanoi District Court was packed to capacity. Journalists, legal observers, and curious onlookers filled the wooden benches, murmuring quietly as the three judges in their solemn black robes took their seats on the elevated dais.
In the defendant's box sat Julian and Beatrice, flanked by their defense attorneys. Neither of them dared to look toward the plaintiff’s gallery, where Clara sat beside Attorney Huong and Senior Lieutenant Mai. Clara wore a simple, elegant white blouse and a dark tailored skirt. Her posture was erect, her expression serene, and her hand rested gently over her growing abdomen.
The presiding judge, Chief Justice Nguyen, adjusted his microphone and cleared his throat. The courtroom instantly fell into absolute silence.
"This court has reviewed all submitted evidence, expert forensic audio authentications, medical examinations, and sworn witness depositions in the matter of the State versus Julian Sterling and Beatrice Sterling," Chief Justice Nguyen announced, his deep voice echoing off the high ceiling.
For forty-five minutes, the judge detailed the findings of the court. He highlighted the severity of the physical trauma, the premeditated cruelty of the assault, and the chilling nature of the multi-party conspiracy captured by the delivery truck's dashcam recording. He explicitly dismissed the defense's claims of digital manipulation, noting that independent state forensics had verified the pristine integrity of the audio file.
"Domestic violence disguised as family discipline is a grave criminal offense that strikes at the core of social justice and human dignity," Chief Justice Nguyen stated firmly, looking directly down at the defendants. "The evidence demonstrates a callous disregard for human life, particularly directed against an expectant mother."
The courtroom held its collective breath as the sentencing was pronounced.
"For the charge of aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm under aggravating circumstances, co-conspirator Beatrice Sterling is hereby sentenced to four years and six months in a state correctional facility. Co-conspirator Julian Sterling is hereby sentenced to three years and eight months in a state correctional facility."
A sharp gasp echoed from the defense gallery as Beatrice slumped forward against the wooden partition, her face burying in her hands. Julian stared blankly ahead, his mouth slightly open, as court bailiffs stepped forward, unclipped his handcuffs from the table, and resecured them tightly behind his back.

As Julian and Beatrice were led out through the secure side exit, Julian turned his head for a single, fleeting second. His eyes met Clara's across the courtroom. There was no anger left in his gaze—only a profound, hollow realization of what he had thrown away.
Clara didn't blink. She simply watched them disappear through the heavy oak doors. The secret they had tried to bury in blood and silence had finally been brought completely into the light.
