Chapter 6 - The Legal Noose Tightens

The morning sun filtered through the high, reinforced windows of the District Court holding annex. The atmosphere was charged with the dry, sterile tension of administrative justice. Clara sat in a small conference room adjacent to the main courtroom, accompanied by Lieutenant Mai and a state-appointed victims' rights attorney named Huong—a sharp, formidable woman with silver-streaked hair and an uncompromising gaze.

Attorney Huong slid a certified copy of the prosecutor's formal indictment across the table.

"The charges have been officially upgraded," Huong said, tapping her finger against the formal legal document. "Because the assault resulted in severe physical trauma to a pregnant individual, and because audio forensics confirm active pre-meditation and multi-party participation, the state prosecutor is moving forward with felony charges under Article 134 and Article 185 of the Penal Code. Julian faces up to five years. Beatrice, given her role as the primary instigator and supervisor of the torture, faces an even stiffer sentence."

Clara scanned the legal headings. Her name appeared repeatedly—not as a victim begging for pity, but as the primary complainant whose digital evidence formed the cornerstone of the prosecution's case.

"And Julian's defense?" Clara asked, her voice calm and steady.

"Their defense strategy is crumbling," Huong replied with a faint, satisfied smile. "Their attorney tried to file a motion to suppress the dashcam audio on privacy grounds, arguing that it was recorded outside the curtilage of the private residence. But Judge Tran dismissed the motion within ten minutes, noting that public-space dashcam recordings capturing criminal offenses occurring in open-air courtyards carry full evidentiary admissibility. Furthermore, the truck driver, Truong, has signed an affidavit confirming he voluntarily turned the recording over to law enforcement without coercion."

Just down the corridor, behind heavy soundproofed doors, Julian and Beatrice were meeting with their legal counsel for what would likely be their final strategy session before the pre-trial hearings. For months, they had relied on intimidation, social pressure, and the assumption that Clara’s silence was a permanent fixture of their household. Now, they were trapped in an inescapable legal apparatus of their own making.

"Clara," Attorney Huong said, leaning forward and lowering her voice slightly. "The defense has signaled through backchannels that they are willing to offer a settlement—financial compensation, relinquishment of any claims to your personal belongings at the house, and an uncontested divorce with immediate alimony—if you agree to submit a character statement recommending clemency to the judge."

Clara didn't hesitate for even a second.

"No," she said, her voice clear, resolute, and absolute. "There will be no character statements. There will be no clemency. Let the court decide based on the recording."

Attorney Huong nodded slowly, a look of profound respect crossing her features. "Then we proceed to trial on all counts. Let’s make sure they understand that some secrets cannot be buried."
