Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Empire

Chaos erupted in the Grand Meridian ballroom like a bomb detonating in a crowded sanctuary.
Whispers escalated into frantic shouts. Several prominent attorneys immediately backed away from Nicholas as if he carried a contagious plague, while local reporters—who had snuck into the gala for society coverage—began aggressively snapping photos of Nicholas’s petrified expression.
Nicholas shoved his way violently through the parting crowd, his face twisted in a mask of manic panic. He lunged toward me, grabbing my wrist with a grip so tight it felt like a vise.
“Sophie!” he hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage and sheer terror. “What is this? What have you done? Turn it off! Tell them it’s a deepfake! Tell them you’re crazy!”
I didn't flinch. I didn't cower. I looked down at his hand gripping my wrist, then slowly raised my gaze to meet his frantic eyes with absolute, chilling serenity.
“Let go of my wrist, Nicholas,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet circle of onlookers surrounding us. “Or do you want to add public assault to your growing rap sheet?”
“You ungrateful little bitch—” he snarled, raising his other hand.
Before his hand could even twitch, two massive, plainclothes security officers—hired directly by Marcus Vance—materialized on either side of him, grabbing his arms and pinning them behind his back with professional efficiency.
“Nicholas Vance,” one of the officers stated loudly, flashing a silver badge. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit medical fraud, illegal administration of restricted substances, extortion, and domestic abuse.”
“This is insane!” Nicholas roared, thrashing wildly against the officers as flashbulbs blinded him from every angle. “My wife is mentally unstable! She engineered this! Look at her! She’s delusional!”
“Actually, Mr. Vance,” a smooth, resonant voice cut through the commotion.
Judge Thomas Henderson stepped forward, his face flushed with righteous fury. He looked at Nicholas with utter disgust. “I’ve presided over corporate fraud cases for thirty years, and I’ve rarely seen such a vile, premeditated scheme. You’re disbarred from practicing law in this state, effective immediately. And as for your custody petition? Consider your parental rights permanently revoked.”
Mother, who had just arrived at the gala late to meet us, pushed her way through the glass doors, stopping dead in her tracks as she saw police officers slapping handcuffs onto her golden-boy son-in-law. Her face went completely blank before she turned and bolted toward the exit, only to find Marcus Vance blocking the doorway with a federal subpoena in his hand.

As Nicholas was dragged out through the grand ballroom doors, kicking and screaming like a cornered animal, he locked eyes with me one last time.
In that single glance, he finally understood: the fragile architect he thought he had successfully broken had just redesigned his entire life into a prison cell.
