Chapter 6 - The Megapixel Confession

Across the vast ballroom, the ambient jazz music suddenly cut out with a harsh, screeching scratch.

The lively chatter of three hundred elite guests instantly died down. In unison, heads turned toward the massive, state-of-the-art projection screen mounted above the stage—the same screen that moments ago had been displaying corporate sponsor logos for the charity foundation.

Now, the screen flickered to life with a stark, high-definition video feed.

A murmur rippled through the crowd. I stood motionless near the edge of the room, my fingers lightly touching the cold glass of my champagne flute, watching the stage with absolute calm.

The video displayed a crystal-clear, high-angle view of our home nursery.

On screen, Nicholas appeared in his immaculate business suit, towering over a sobbing Sophie while she rocked baby Julian.

“You’re a parasite, Sophie,” Nicholas’s amplified voice boomed across the silent ballroom, echoing off the marble pillars with brutal clarity. “You live in my house. You spend my money. And you still think you have the right to complain?”

Judge Henderson choked on his scotch, coughing violently as he stared up at the giant screen in utter disbelief.

Around the room, jaws dropped. High-society matrons gasped, covering their mouths with manicured hands. Several corporate partners from Nicholas’s law firm froze mid-stride, their faces draining of all color.

The video kept playing, rolling through the footage with methodical cruelty. Nicholas grabbing my hair by the crib. Nicholas threatening to show fake medical records to lawyers. Nicholas laughing as he swapped out my postpartum vitamins with unlabeled neuroleptic pills in the nursery drawer.

And then, the audio recording played out loud for the entire city elite to hear:

“Just make sure the dosage is high enough, Nicholas,” my mother’s unmistakable voice rang through the ballroom speakers. “If she’s too alert, she’ll start asking questions about the house deeds...”

Silence descended upon the grand hall—a heavy, suffocating silence where you could hear a pin drop on the carpet.

From across the room, I watched Nicholas freeze mid-step by the bar, the tray of sparkling water slipping from his trembling fingers and shattering against the marble floor with a deafening crash.

He spun around, his face turning a ghastly shade of chalk-white, his eyes scanning the terrified crowd until they finally locked onto me.

I tilted my head, gave him a small, polite wave, and smiled.
